How to Save Money at Little Cottonwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 15 year old cat had been suffering from bone cancer for a while and I felt I had run out of options. When I brought him here, all the doctors who saw him had treated him very lovingly and carefully, and I was kept fully informed of all treatment options available for him. All the advice given to me was straightforward while also taking into account that I was grieving him. As someone who had been feeling completely devasted about his slow decline, everyone at the hospital had brought me a sort of peace as they had reassured me I had done everything I could to help him. On the day I had to bring him in to be euthanized, they allowed me to bring in my whole family to say goodbye. My family and I were allowed to take our time to be with him in the room until we were ready to let him go, and when the time came, the process itself was quick and peaceful. Dr. Horvath had walked us through every step of the euthanasia, and while my family had been distraught over the process, having her walk us through everything was incredibly reassuring and had allowed us to focus on him in his last moments. We were given all the time needed to mourn him and I never felt rushed to leave. Even when I came in 2 weeks later to pick up his ashes, the front desk staff were very kind and comforted me once again for his loss. This is the only hospital where I felt my concerns were taken seriously and where my cat's issues were dealt with immediately. At other hospitals, I had been told to wait days or even weeks for x-rays to even begin the process of diagnosing him. Here, the day I brought him was the day I had finally learned what his issue was and had been given treatment to start right away. I live about 45 minutes away but this is the only place I'd consider taking my babies for treatment. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone who is thinking of bringing their pets here. The staff are very understanding and straightforward, the rooms are always cleaned right before I'm taken inside, and I feel like all my concerns are heard and acknowledged!

Best hospital and vets anywhere. Been coming here for years. My dog now is 17 and they have taken such good care of her. Many dogs and cats before her were patients too wouldn’t trust anyone else.

Terribly disappointing visit Thursday 8/10/23. After sending exact RX text request TUESDAY am....2 days earlier "Hydrocodone, pimobendan and furosemide 30 tabs ea" Recd text Wed "meds are ready for pick up"....we arrived 12:25p Th to pick the meds up. Texting we are on the way, 3 stop lights away etc. Updates. ONLY to be told upon arrival after paying $130 while checking out....NO furosemide, forgot. Oooops. Overlooked, wont be filled till after 2pm. WE have to now find something else to do...till 2pm, but evidently till 2:10pm when staff figures out how to count. THEN GETTING HOME, realize! NO!!!!!! My request/order wasn't fullfilled as requested at all. I recd, 60 pimobendan 30 furosemide 20 hydrocodone WE are seniors on a budget and need to fullfill RXs as best we can. WHY WAS HYDROCODONE SHORTED? 10 tabs WHY WAS PIMOBENDAN OVERFILLED BY 30? WHY WAS FUROSEMIDE FORGOTTEN/OVERLOOKED? The staff as hard as they want to appear as professionals are certainly anything else. The attitudes and BLANK capabilities are perfect examples of where we are 2023. Now, they refuse to complete my original order as well answer emails. MOVING ON !
