How to Save Money at Desert Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The vet that did my dog's spay was amazing. My dog was not showing but turned out to be pregnant! On the surgery day they called me because they cut her open and found 7 puppies. Thankfully I was given the option to terminate the puppies or put them back. I'm so happy they gave me that option, the vet on I ave had told me before that they would terminate the puppies no matter what. We had 7 beautiful puppies born a few weeks later and then got her fixed. She is doing great.

My previous baby pasted away when i took her to another place to get fixed So, I was vey hesitant when I left my Lil Girl at Desert Care Animal Hospital. I worried the whole time and when they called told us she was ready to go home. I got there ready to take my baby home yet inside of me I had questions and I guess it was written all over my face because the staff explained everything. The young lady that works the front told me in detail what to expect, look out for, and showed me how to give my baby medicine and especially how to carry her. I read and followed all instructions took pictures of her incision. I recommend Desert Care Animal Hospital to every person that needs their baby Spayed. Excellent job💜 A BIG THANK YOU FOR TAKING GOOD CARE OF MY BABY

Very kind workers, treated my dog like their own and it made my dog feel more comfortable going to the vet. The workers were informed and able to answer any questions I had about procedures. My dog was done with his neutering right when they estimated he would be and the first thing they told me was that he was doing good.

One star due to the unprofessionalism and rudeness of the receptionist. Initially I chose Desert Care animal hospital because of the high reviews. I wish someone would have warned me and this is why I am giving my honest opinion. I took my pups in for tails and dew claws removed. I called in and scheduled an appointment and over the phone they were very polite and helpful. On appointment day I called in again just to confirm my appointment. I never got to meet the doctor the receptionist was going back and forth from the waiting room to the doctor relaying messages. I paid for The procedures of tails docked and dew claws removed. My husband picked up the puppies once they were all done at closing time. When I saw them I noticed their due claws were not done. I called in the next morning to tell them and they said they didn't know I wanted them done but yet they scheduled my appointment for them and charged me for them? I asked if they can do them since I already paid and I did want them done. Over the phone someone apologize for the miss understanding and told me to bring them in. When I arrived the young girl with dark puffy curly hair was extremely rude from the start. She said you didn't want them done but you changed your mind so now your back? I then explain to her that I made an appointment for both procedures and paid for both procedures, they charged me for both procedures but the claws were never done and that is why I am back. Why would they change me for the work but not do it? Then blame me for it not getting done? So I don't know if this is how they work, charging and don't do the work or if it just happened to me? Just be careful if you do decide to go to this vet. Double check and make sure you are getting what you are paying for and know that their communication skills are not the best so you have to be on them. Maybe talk to the vet and not the girls at the front desk. I should have known but this was my first time there.

Dr McLain is pretty damn wonderful, her staff is just as compassionate as she is.....loved everyone in that building. I got more time with my boy and I certainly wasn't expecting that. I am forever greatful for a loving and knowledgeable veterinarian. Thank you all. 🐾💙
