How to Save Money at VCA Elk Grove Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I do not recommend this VCA. I signed up for the payment plan for my puppy that covers all her shots, fecal samples, and wellness checks. After my dogs first couple of visits for her vaccines, I noticed a change in her behavior when we would walk up the building. Now after all her shots are done, she is absolutely terrified to walk through the front door. I’m not sure how they treated her when she was getting vaccinated but her behavior has changed a lot. I can’t get out of the payment plan contract either so I am forced to continue to take her back to this place. Additionally, I made an appointment more recently for a wellness check and I drove 30 minutes to find out the lady never scheduled it in the system so I was turned away. After my yearly contract is up, I will not be returning to this VCA.

We first went to Elk Grove VCA because our senior cat, Charlie, needed an urgent visit, and our regular vet couldn’t fit him in. They quickly became his primary vet, even when we moved from The Pocket to East Sac, and the drive time doubled. They are incredibly professional, courteous, and compassionate. Dr. Van Riper is, far and away, the best vet I’ve ever encountered. Truly a superstar. When Charlie was diagnosed with diabetes and needed even more attentive care, they stepped it up and continued to be there for us, often at the drop of a hat. Two nights ago, he took a turn for the worst, and we decided it was time. While the process of putting him down was awful, the staff was kind, considerate, and made the process so much less painful. He left this world peacefully, and we are so grateful for that.

We have been going here for for several years with 2 dogs but the last time that we took our 2 years old shepherd in for a hurt paw the vet said that she wouldn't touch it even though he had a mussel on, other than that one vet they are excellent

***please note this is a review of ONE dr. Please read carefully as I've had great experiences with them for years until this point*** I had a 23 yr old cat who was showing end of life symptoms. It took my vet friend a week to convince me to take her in to put her down. I made a wellness appointment to discuss my options. I made it very clear that I only wanted to discuss euthanasia. I was seen by a Dr A who is older with long grey hair and glasses. She utterly dismissed me and said my cat needed 1k in labs and an exploratory surgery. I told her she's 23 she can't survive that. This dr told me my cat is only 15. I told the Dr I bought the cat 8 years ago and she was 15 then and she's only skin and fur and you can see her bones. The dr accused me of not feeding my cat or caring for her. I told the dr my cat is incontinent and eat 3x a day, full cans of food and continues to loose weight just like my last older cat before he died. She was extremely dismissive and refused to discuss euthanasia. I ended up watching my cat suffer for 48h screaming in pain and she had multiple seizures. Yes, I know what cat seizures look like. I called around to multiple vets and no one could get me in and the only ones who could would only do it for 1200 and were too far away at over an hour each. I couldn't do ANYTHING to help. Dr a took away my ability to give my cat a painless and dignified death. I hope I never see that dr again. The vet tech that day was amazingly kind and friendly. I hope he goes to veterinary school. My cat normally hates men. Like haaaaaaates men. She was so calm and good for him. He must be a truly good person. Dr yu is my cats normal dr. She's so kind and sweet and truly listens. She's so mindful of your pet and your budget and goes out of her way to do the most for your pet. She saved me so much money. I usually request her when I go in. The staff there are Excellent and go out of their way not just for my cats comfort but for me as well. They're so kind and thoughtful and I've never once gotten any kind of attitude. I get their full attention every time I talk to them.
