How to Save Money at Purple Paws Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot express how grateful I am to have stumbled upon this office while traveling out of state. The staff is so friendly that I felt as if I’ve known them for a long time. From the front desk to the back every employee showed such compassion, care, and kindness. Dr Paar is hands down the best Dr I have EVER EVER had the pleasure of meeting. She was very informative as well as understanding my dogs anxiety issues. She and the team made him feel very comfortable during tooth extractions. I was soooooo nervous as any fur parent would be to have a procedure done, but Dr Paar and the team made me feel calm and confident. I wish I could bring this entire team back to my hometown for future vet visits. I highly recommend!!

We previously had an elderly cat that we took to another local vet and had horrible experiences with them. So...when we adopted two 2-year-old cats from the humane society late last year, we delayed taking them to a vet due to our anxiety and wanting our new additions to settle into their new home and family before traumatizing them with a vet visit. When we recently noticed one of our cats had tapeworms, we knew we had to find a vet. We decided to give Purple Paws a chance, and so glad we did. They got us in that afternoon and immediately took us to the examining room to begin the examination process. One of our cats is very skittish and shy, but Dr. Paar and the assistants were wonderful with both cats. My husband and I were relieved that our kitties responded well to the experience and appreciated Purple Paws' courteous and knowledgeable staff.

Absolutely love Purple Paws!! My dog Skipper is really nervous when it comes to vets. Thanks to Covid I couldn't go in with him to his first appointment here for his shots and I was really nervous. They reassured me he would be fine and the lady who came and took him back was so nice. He was so excited when she mentioned lots of treats. 🤣 The vet called my husband and talked to him about the visit and told us everything they did and what he needed. They were very thorough and really put my mind at ease that he was getting the best care. He came out smiling and wagging his tail and was so happy. I will recommend them to everyone I meet! Very reasonable prices considering the area as well. He wasn't even sore from his shots which tells me they were very gentle with him and he enjoyed his time. Anytime I call and ask questions they are always eager to answer and give me the best care advice. A million stars! Thank you Purple Paws Skipper loves you guys ❤️❤️ Including a picture of my boy as well.

Brought our pet here for his regular care after arriving in SD. He presented several signs of allergies and we expressed our concerns. We received treatment, but not after being told how irresponsible it was for us to bring him across the country on our move. Talk about ignorance! The one time we had a good experience here was when we dealt with Dr. Paar, who gave us so much hope that this clinic was not all that bad. But we rarely ever saw her, and every visit after that was a merry-go-round emotionally and financially. Between the financial, emotional, and logistical toll that this clinic put us through, we have since switched to a much better vet clinic. Be sure to weigh your options before choosing who should care for your furbabies!

We brought our puppy to Purple Paws and had a fantastic experience. The staff were all attentive and sweet. Dr. Paar was excellent and our whole visit was as easy can be. We had a long list of things we needed and the team was able to accommodate all of them. 100% recommend bringing your pup here.
