How to Save Money at VCA Valley Oak Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had to bring my cat in for an emergency checkup and found out it was a blockage in his urinary tract. They got us in and diagnosed him within 15 minutes. He had to be hospitalized for 6 days and they did everything to make sure he came home to us. Very grateful for this amazing and compassionate team that worked with us to get the job done! Very good communication and care! Goose is definitely feeling much better! 🧡 definitely recommend pet care from the VCA team!

Thank you for giving my dog Buddy peace. I’ve never had to be in the room with my own animal during a euthanasia process. It was incredibly difficult, but the amount of care and warmth your staff gave him means everything to me.

This pet hospital is the best one I have been to. We had a very big issue with one of our pit bulls and no other vet or pet hospital was willing to help us do to his breed. They have helped my dog twice with both pretty big issues and my dog has came back to me 100 percent taken care of and back to normal. My dogs are like my kids and they definitely treated him the same.

I brought my dog in for a bite wound from another dog. He had to have emergency surgery. Unfortunately the wound became unseized and was infected. I had a rough experience at first when I brought him in to be rechecked. I contacted the office manager and she quickly called me back and remedied the situation. She was also very understanding and compassionate, as was the vet that came in to examine him. He explained things thoroughly and seemed very compassionate.

For the Love of Dog Training

I unfortunately have had to visit twice this month when my primary was closed and have a colleagues dogs brought in for anaphylaxis. The first was on Easter. The dog was treated well and they were wonderful to work with. On Wednesday of last week a team mate from Yuba Co Search & Rescues dog was stung while at k9 training in Paradise and experienced anaphylaxis they carefully and diligently treated the dog and cared for her airway. Then there is today the out come was not as positive but I knew was inevitable. Today, I got a call from our autistic adult son that one of our personal dogs wasn't breathing well. Knowing the genetics of the dog I had a strong feeling she was not going to be coming home. I was still an hour from the house, I told my son to take her to VCA and I would call to let them know. I called them immediately giving them her stats and letting them know my son had autism and might not be able to give information as well as he might be frightened. They took care of the dog and let me know he was upset. When I arrived I sent him home. The doctor and I agreed that the prognosis for our dog was poor and it was best to ease her suffering. They were every compassionate considering the nature of their job. Although they are not my primary practitioner I feel confident not just taking my own dogs to them but also my client dogs for care in the event of an emergency. We are lucky to have them as an after hours option in our community. Thank you for caring for Hendrix and my son till I got there. I am forever grateful for you guys.
