How to Save Money at Town & Country Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been very happy with Dr. Rhoades since he recently took over from Dr. Sevier who was our vet for over 20 years at Town & County Animal Hospital and was an absolutely wonderful vet. Dr. Rhoades has big shoes to fill, but so far we've been quite happy with him. I immediately appreciate a vet who's gets right down on the floor with the dog to do an examination. He and his staff took care of our dog Heidi when she had a foxtail that worked it's way far up her foot and into her leg. She's doing great now after the surgery to remove the foxtail. I would certainly recommend Dr. Rhoades and his friendly staff.

DO NOT COME HERE!!! EXPENSIVE AND SHADY!! Dr. Sevier retired and some other management / vet team took over and it’s nothing like it used to be. The new vet tried to shove all of these exams and treatments down our throats that are in all honesty unnecessary because our dog is perfectly healthy. We were also initially told it was going to be $50 and the overall cost ended up being $200. All she needed were updated vaccines. An elderly couple ahead of us was arguing with the front desk because they were being charged $700 for an exam after they were told it was only going to cost $67. Turns out they ran “other” tests during the exam and didn’t ask or discuss with the couple prior. AVOID COMING AT ALL COSTS!!

Thought I had found the right place for my dog and came in confident that I was doing the right thing. She has a fast growing tumor that needs to be removed and it took this vets office almost 2 weeks to get me a realistic quote of the things we were looking at having done. The first quote was sent within the first week and included all sorts of charges for procedures we had not discussed that totaled $4000. I was able to get an off-the-cuff rough estimate from the front desk after calling repeatedly to see what the charges would be but never got a revised estimate. In the meantime I did receive multiple emails reminding me to get additional recommended procedures but not the quote. Normally her surgery costs around $400, but that was in a less expensive part of the world so we thought maybe this would cost $1000 here… The off the cuff guess I got from the front desk was for $2500. Now I have to look for another vet because this vet just wasted two weeks of critical time while my dogs tumor is growing rapidly. Not only are they putting her in further danger with their time wasting tactics, but I never got an official estimate for the care she needed nor did I get actual reassurance from the doctor that I was on the same page with the doctor as to what surgery she was getting exactly. I mentioned my last concern to the front desk and she tried to tell me what the doctor probably said… Excuse me? I literally had a conversation face-to-face with the doctor that she was not a part of and now she is telling me what he told me? The attitude here is just offensive. I really miss my old vet who actually spent time with us and didn’t over charge us.

Had our first ever visit last week and we loved the staff! Our two rescue pups were very comfortable; my social pup took to the staff right away and my more shy pup was treated with the level of gentleness he needed by Dr. Rhoades to feel comfy. We're so pleased to be with Town&Country!
