How to Save Money at VCA Benicia Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This review is long overdue!! We switched to VCA Benicia when our dog Ellie was a puppy (after we had negative experiences elsewhere) and could not be happier! First and foremost the doctors and staff are so fantastic. Dr. Jacobsen is our main vet-- she is compassionate, thoughtful, walks you through treatment plans, and never makes you feel rushed. My pup Ellie loves her! All the vet techs are amazing as well, they are gentle, quick, and great at what they do. Everyone goes out of their way to make sure that your animal feels safe and secure before doing any exam or starting the appointment. Front office staff has always been kind and so accommodating when we call with questions and to make appointments. We have never had a wait, they are so great at working us in off the waitlist when we have an acute issue, and have a super efficient text messaging system to convey info about appointments and results. I also love that they walk you through an itemized plan before any treatment starts so there are no hidden fees when you check out. Compared to other practices we've been to VCA's prices are very fair! Our pup Ellie had her spay surgery here as well as acute wound care after she was attacked by another dog (worked us in same day), and we truly couldn't have had better experiences. All in all, We HIGHLY recommend this clinic, the doctors, and the staff! Five stars, Ten if I could!

Always great visits, doctors are excellent and helpful in explaining conditions and treatments. All staff is great. You might pay a little more, but you get a little more. I'm very okay with that. Also, easy pay with immediate email receipt. Place is sterile and clean. One demerit is customer benches/chairs, in waiting area and the one exam room I visited. There are hard and uncomfortable, wooden seat area, no cushions. I don't have much padding back there and it was bad for me.

Shasta is always so happy to come and see everyone, and we are so happy for the great customer service ! Ms. Olivia was so nice as always (we love her!!) and Dr. Ryan Machowski was a pleasure as well. It's always nerve wracking having your pets under new care but he was so sweet to her and thorough in answering our millions of questions. It brings us so much comfort to know we can always trust having our baby here! P.s. please enjoy this ADORABLE picture they sent us from inside :)

I wish I could give VCA Benicia Animal Hospital 10 stars! We have had such poor luck finding a new vet office we love since moving to the area, and VCA went out of their way today to prove they care about our pets and about us. Even though they didn't have an appointment available to treat my pup's ear infection at first, Kim called me back right away when she learned of a cancellation, and Dr. Ryan took the very best care of him. They calmed his nerves with tasty treats, and it felt like the whole staff came out to the waiting room to meet him and give him love. He's now home and on the mend with a pain-free ear, and we will go back to VCA every time he needs care moving forward.
