How to Save Money at Bellwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I came to this hospital in an emergency with my almost dead dog 🥺 We were walking in the park as usual and suddenly she was barking with a lot of pain and we didn't know what was wrong with her, and suddenly she collapsed and we had to do CPR on her as we arrived at Bellwood animal hospital, they managed to revive her and save her life, they They did blood tests and x-rays to find out what had happened. They were very patient with us, they explained her procedures and allowed us to see her as soon as possible and that gave us peace of mind to return home to rest. We had to leave her for observation and the next morning they returned her alive, stable and bathed. It has been the best Thanksgiving 🎁 gift we have received, being able to have family dinner together. Thanks to Monic and Dr Khalid and all their team work for bringing us back to our Daphne 💝

Do NOT bring your pets here. I had the worst experience with Dr Hardiy. He does not care for your pet, he only cares about your money. He will overcharge you and lie about what’s wrong with your furry friend. We brought in our dog and he said he needed surgery and wanted to charge us an absurd amount of money. Dr. Hardiy wanted to charge us over 4 thousand dollars to remove an abscess! He said it was very crucial and started raising his voice to us because we didn’t have that amount of money he was asking for. We felt pressured, uneased, and overwhelmed. Then he kept asking how much can we give him. He was very unprofessional and untrustworthy. Luckily we took our dog to his primary vet after seeing Dr. Hardiy and the doctor said he was actually fine. That he did NOT have an abscess and there was no need for surgery!! Dr. Hardiy is a liar, scammer, and manipulating cruel man. He takes advantage of your situation. No pet owner should experience the stress, horror, and anxiety that Dr. Hardiy will put on you and your pet.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. My dog got a pretty nasty gouge on her face from a neighbor’s cat.VCA had a six hour wait so they referred us to this vet. First of all, the clinic looks unkempt, unclean, and horrid. Second, the vet tried to tell us that my dog’s wound was old and infected. The dog had just gotten hurt 45 minutes prior so there’s no way it was infected already. And third of all- they quoted us just under $1500 to do surgery with general anesthesia. I’ve been a hospital nurse for 8 years and while I admit humans and dogs are different, the basics are the same. And I knew from my nursing judgement that I didn’t feel comfortable letting this vet put my dog under. And I also had a hunch that she wouldn’t benefit from surgery based on the nature of the wound. So we paid the exam fee and hightailed it out of there. We kept it professional and just said we we were gonna pursue other options. I asked for a receipt for the exam fee and the front desk associate proceeded to take a phone call and move with the speed of molasses to get us the receipt while my dog was still clearly injured and needing medical care. We called around and got a recommendation to Long Beach Urgent Animal Care on Anaheim St. The vet there was wonderful. They charged us $400 to give our dog twilight sedation, clean the wound, and sent us home with antibiotics. There was no tissue to even suture. I’d post a pic but I don’t want to be graphic. I have no idea what the vet at this place was planning to do in surgery if there was no viable tissue left to suture. The whole thing is just disturbing. Please avoid!

Dr. Khalid does not listen and is very demeaning. I brought my dog in with what appeared to be back pain and change in appetite. he quickly diagnosed as 'old dog' and recommended adequin injections. He did not do a thorough assessment and overlooked a serious issue with her stomach and throat (our primary vet was able to follow up during normal business hours). I paid upfront for 8 injections and was told I would be credited if all were not used. unfortunately, my dog has passed away (due to ultimately throat cancer, which Dr did not even assess her for). He is now stating that because the manufacturer won't take back the doses he cant credit it me. highly recommend seeking care elsewhere.

Father’s Day Sunday they were open, our dog started sneezing over and over again for several minutes. Luckily Bellwood Animal hospital was nearby. We were worried about the low reviews but it was an emergency. Somehow, as we got into the waiting room the sneezing stopped. Maybe allergies? We were feeling foolish, maybe we came for nothing and now we’d have to pay the (fair) $100+ fee. The doctor saw us in the waiting room and said “What’s wrong with this beauuuutiful doggy?” We explained the situation. He came out with his stethoscope, checked her breathing and airways and said “she’s ok, but if she starts sneezing again come back and I’ll give her a free exam.” They gave us peace of mind in minutes, for free. We were uplifted. We were able to get back to our family party before most people realized we had left. Thank you so much everyone at Bellwood Animal Hospital, your kindness will not go unnoticed.
