How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff was very welcoming and kind. My dog was trembling when I brought her in to be vaccinated and totally calm when I picked her up. Coco had a recent back injury and was acting so distant she didn't want to sit on my lap or sleep with me. The vet explained that because dogs are pack animals, they don't want others to know when they're hurt because it makes them look vulnerable. Hence, they separate themselves until they've healed. That reassured me and explained a lot about my pup's behavior. In a few days she was back to her normal, cuddly self.

I’ve been taking my dog and my cat here since they were babies. They have hired some new front office people that are on their A game. They answer the phones, they follow up and relay questions to the surgical team in a timely manner. The surgical nurse is very sweet in answering all questions and concerns. I have my babies on the wellness plan. It great for routine care. Emergency visits are referred to another hospital and aren't included in the plan. But no stress. Happy to bring my babies in here!

It's tough to remember or even want to relive the experience of bringing in your beloved pet and being told almost before you sit down in a room that they have passed. The staff took her in right away as she was seizing again when i arrived. But I got there too late. This was at about 2 am. The drive was from Coolidge, I averaged about 100 mph. But there was nothing they could do. It's still a bit too traumatic to think about. But they were very kind and allowed me time to regain my composure before I left.

There are two locations in Banfield that I trust with my fur babies. One is Scottsdale off Miller. It has one of the best customer services. I will drive out of my way to have my fur babies be seen there.

Used to take my last dog to a previous banfield location so took my current one here for immediate assistance on a small paw injury- a cut maybe half the size or a penny or so. The receptionist was lovely and helpful, but the vet tech was awful. The appearance was that she was biased towards bully breeds since she had a disgusted look on her face when she walked into my dog (a happy, well socialized and excitable puppy) and said “ugh, stop” and waved her hands when my puppy went to jump up on her (not the best behavior, but immediately corrected and very common for young dogs and not aggressive or uncommon for techs or any animal owners to experience.) They initially told me it was $57 to clean the wound which became $524 after she had been there for 4 hours because they told me she was so “unruly” that it couldn’t be examined. Again, this is a dog who is well socialized and who has no problem at a grooming office in a basic restraint, so there’s no reason this should have been needed even if the area was painful. Even if a quick sedation was truly needed, $500 is absurd for that when all they’re administering is a generic benadryl. They tried to quote me $60 for antibiotics alone, some of the cheapest medication that money can buy. Her normal vet by comparison is handling the issue for well under $200 out the door. After 5 years with my previous dog at Banfield the extortionist prices and biased practices today will have me never returning here. Yikes
