How to Save Money at Phoenix Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my baby Leeloo to see Dr. Ray, she was very thurough examining her and explained what could be wrong. Dr. Ray explained to me what measure to take to get Leeloo back on her feet. She gave me information to assist in my little girls recovery. It's been a week now and Leeloo is well on her way to recovery. I thank PVC for seeing me quickly and accommodating my needs.

I'm only writing this because we love our pets as children and I want to warn about seeing Dr. Courtney Parker while Praising Dr. Nichola Ray. Please read my experience to understand why... My cat had an issue with her paw that seemed to be getting worse so I took her to Phoenix Veterinary Center., where she had been a few times before. The receptionist took it upon herself to have the cat examined by a newer doctor named Dr. Courtney Parker. Not wanting to make a fuss, I saw her. The exam revealed that there wasn't a thorn or anything I was unable to see and Dr Parker was not sure what the issue was and sent me home with 4 prescriptions and an appointment to come back in 2 weeks. Two weeks later and the cat is getting worse and now limping on her paw. Dr. Parker gave a refill on the exact same medication and sent me home with no real information and an appointment to return in 2 more weeks. 2 weeks later, not only is the paw not any better, but now something is going on with her tail. Dr. Parker sent me home with a shampoo and yet another refill. After about a week and a half, I called pretty angry wanting to know WHY I was now 5.5 weeks into this, $800 lighter and my cat was worse than when I originally brought her in! The receptionist was very understanding and while not saying anything bad about Dr. Parker ( Did she really need to?), suggested that I might want to see Dr. Ray who was the original vet. She explained that Dr. Ray has over 20 years as a vet, while Dr. Parker was recently out of school. I go in for the next follow up and this time, saw Dr Ray, who had the cat diagnosed, prescribed all new meds and out the door. She knew what she was doing and within days, the cat was getting better, and within 2 weeks was completely healed! So 5 Stars to Dr. Ray and 1 star star for Dr. Parker, hence my 3 star review.

My elder, white Maltese mix has not been the same since having surgery here to remove external polyps from her ear. I don't know what happened but she is not the same dog. She doesn't play, sleeps all the time, is unsteady on her feet, doesn't respond to her name or any other verbal or visual cues. She stares off into space and doesn't look like she feels well at all. It's been over a month weeks and she hasn't improved. I need to have her checked out by a different vet. I paid $900+ at this vet just to get her back with a whole new set of ailments. Update August 2023: Sadly, my dog continued to decline and is no longer with us. The one thing I am certain of is that she went in one dog and came out a completely different one. My personal belief is that something happened to her at this vet, and I recommend seeking treatment for your pet elsewhere.
