How to Save Money at 1st Pet Veterinary Centers - North Valley

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last night, my pup’s distress left me feeling helpless. Despite my groomer’s suggestion to visit the vet, I hesitated. When his condition worsened, I rushed to Canyon State Veterinary Hospital, hoping for quick assistance. The front desk staff were kind, but the lengthy wait, excessive paperwork, and the unsettling policy of separating pets from their owners left me frustrated. Desperate for a better option, I discovered 1st Pet Veterinary Centers North Valley. My visit was nothing short of outstanding. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was calming, and the front desk staff exuded warmth. The contrast with my previous experience elsewhere was remarkable. Dr. Lunt went above and beyond, demonstrating genuine care and understanding. Sitting on the floor with my pup and turning the chair my way showed a level of empathy and respect that left a lasting impression. The waiting room was not just a space; it was a comforting environment, complete with thoughtful amenities like snacks and water. Choosing 1st Pet Veterinary Centers North Valley was the right decision. The entire experience, from start to finish, felt personal and compassionate. This is now my preferred choice for my dog’s care, and I highly recommend it to others seeking exceptional veterinary services.

Well 5 stars barely starts to cover it! 1st Pet Veterinary on N 7th Ave and Union Hills is an amazing group of people that are truly angels. Let me preface this with our house is made for animals and dogs especially! We have 7 dogs 3 cats and we're one happy house hold! But sometimes things come up. That being said I've called all other Valley ER center's for pricing and wait times etc. And 1st Pet is always very honest, forthcoming and always has been the most fair price for care and time. Just remember your pets injury might not be as severe as another's and your wait time can be significant but, I'd wait bedside for a week if I had to for my buddies. So save yourself the trouble and just go here! It's a first come first served and based on treatments etc. And make sure to talk about budget's, financing, etc. They have a lot of options and will work with you! Don't be scared to ask. I've had to use this 1st Pet for various reasons, we've had dog to dog bites, we've had wound (stitches break open) all the way to one of our dogs having a stroke. When Bradey our 4yo Cattle Dog had a stroke we didn't know what was going on. We brought him in and he was triaged right away. The doctor came in and gave me the news. She was honest, I asked her to be as forth coming as possible and to let me know what we can do for him. I was a hard choice but we did have to choose to let Bradey go play over the rainbow. That being said she gave me instructions and prep'ed me for taking him home so we can do it with family and at home in comfort. Let's just say that Bradey lived the best last week of his life! I only have 1st Pet to thank for the guidance and the hard choice's made easy, not only with Bradey but with all my animals I've brought here. In closing, sometimes owning a pet is hard, be it financially, emotionally, daily lol but they're our best buddies! And 1st Pet is my best buddy when I need emergency help. Their staff is beyond professional from the phone call process, and between walking in the front door and leaving. When you're there, you know you're in a special place brought together by love and full of angels. Thank You 1st Pet Veterinary for all you do! Our Amanda was extremely sick when we had to take her for emergency treatment at 1st Pet several times (always on the weekend!) We really didn’t know what was wrong, she was only 7/1/2 years old. After several visits as an emergency/urgent care patient we decided to make 1st Pet Amanda’s primary care veterinary clinic. Doctor Larsen was very helpful in directing us to get treatment by Doctor Kreissler, an internal medicine specialist with 1st Pet. It took time but Amanda’s puppy nature returned and over all she is doing really well! We are 100% thankful with the care she received at 1st Pet. Everyone has been so helpful, including all the techs and admin staff.

Thank you to the amazing staff at 1st Pet! We called at 8pm on a Friday night after we noticed a scary irregularity with our senior dog. Avery who answered our call was very helpful and sweet while getting us set up for an appointment. Once we got there, we were seen quickly. The vet tech, Allison, was extremely kind and left us feeling confident that our dog was safe and healthy. Thanks a million to you all! We highly recommend 1st Pet!
