How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My wife and I take our cat Keylee and our kitten Felix to see Dr. Sharma and her vet tech, Lupita, and we couldn’t be more grateful for them. They treat our babies with so much love and care, always making them feel safe and comfortable. You can tell they truly love what they do, it shows in every visit. It’s such a relief knowing our pets are in the hands of people who genuinely care, not just doing a job. Thank you, Dr. Sharma and Lupita, for always going above and beyond for our little family.

Banfield saved my precious dog from having 4 unnecessary extractions. I had originally been told by my dog’s vet of 5 years that she would be due for her 1st dental cleaning this year. When I inquired on the pricing for the cleaning it was very high so I looked into other options for a cleaning. I found a place that only does dental cleanings for pets and went in for a free consultation. They recommended 4 extractions along with filing several teeth and expensive medication for pain. This was shocking since her vet had never mentioned any significant problems, just that she needed a cleaning. A friend of mine brings her dogs to Banfield and recommended that I go in for a second opinion. I took advantage of the free new patient exam Banfield offers to meet the Dr. and review my dog having a cleaning. The Dr was very nice and didn’t seem to think her teeth would need extensive treatment. They offer a plan that includes a dental cleaning, vaccinations, unlimited exams, bloodwork, parasite treatment among a few other benefits for $800 a year that can be paid at once or over the year. This was an incredible savings over what I would have paid at her previous vet or the pet dental clinic. I signed her up and scheduled the cleaning. I was nervous to have her teeth cleaned but everything went exceptionally well. Dr. Nick and his team took great care of her and provided me a detailed account of his findings and indicated her teeth looked great and she had no problems. I am so grateful I brought her here and honestly can’t believe the other clinic would have removed 4 healthy teeth. I have also brought her in for allergy issues that she has a been having for a while. The unlimited office visits being included with the plan has saved me a lot of money as well. I want to thank everyone at this location for taking care of my baby!

Front desk employees are good, DRs are personable. Only thing is if you pay for their pet insurance be sure to know what's covered and what isn't.

This is my favorite Banfield location! I have 2 miniature dachshunds, one who is 15 and the other who is 2. I have been using banfield as a vet for both of them for years and have been to several different locations across several different states and the location on 91st is by far the most caring efficient location I have been to and is now my favorite! The entire staff is kind, friendly and genuinely happy to help! It is easy to schedule appointments with great availability. The recaps from the vets and the care provided by the staff makes every experience a 5 star one! I appreciate that they are pet focused and help me plan for care that makes sense for my pup family that I can afford. Pictures of happy healthy pups for reference!

It's always a great experience when I take my cat, Declan, for a nail trim with Lindee. She's the cat whisperer with my big boy.
