How to Save Money at Aspen Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When I moved to town a few years ago, I called around looking for a vet that I felt good about. My senior Shih Tzu is super dramatic and sassy, so I wanted a good experience for her annual checkup and vaccinations as well as any medical care needed in between. Besides having the highest reviews, Aspen was the only place that didn’t give me the ick, and it’s remained true for the past two years. Last spring (in between check ups) I took her to a place closer to town (and 10 minutes more convenient for me) for an abscess she got on her face. Didn’t love the experience so high tailed it back to Aspen for our regularly scheduled visit. They are also open weekends which I found is not always the case with the other vets. Highly recommend. Dr. Dickinson and her staff are the sweetest.

We had a wonderful first experience. We are new to the Flagstaff area and were able to get a same-day appointment for our pup, who developed an allergy-related rash after the move. The front desk staff were very friendly, the vet assistant was polite and helpful, and the veterinarian was both knowledgeable and kind. Our pup received an injection for the rash and we’ve already seen a big improvement. We will definitely be coming back for routine visits and vaccinations.

I cannot thank Aspen Veterinary Clinic enough for the amazing care they gave my sweet girls. I’m From the moment we walked in, the staff was so kind, welcoming, and gentle. You can tell they truly love animals and treat them like their own. My dogs were a little nervous, but the doctor and techs took the time to comfort them and explain everything to me in a way I could understand. It made such a stressful situation so much easier. I’m beyond grateful that we have such a compassionate and professional clinic in our community. They go above and beyond, and it really shows. If you’re looking for a place that will treat your fur babies with love and respect, this is it. Thank you again, Aspen Veterinary Clinic, for helping my girls feel better and giving me peace of mind. You all are a blessing! 💕🐾

If you search their one star reviews you’ll see many like mine. DO NOT RECOMMEND. I’ve never been more disgusted and disappointed with a Veterinarian practice. I wish I could give zero stars. I let them know that I’d been posting this review, as no living being deserves to go through what my baby went through. The photos I have posted are of an email I sent to Aspen after several phone conversations. I would never recommend them to anyone. Ever. I’m not a review poster, good or bad, however this story needs told because it’s absolute blasphemy what happened and I would hate for it to happen to another person…who knows how many people it’s already happened to. They didn’t email back, they called me-they stated they would only issue the $115 refund and that they wouldn’t refund the rest because the vet care was provided (what care?🤮…), that their camera in the lobby “wasn’t working that day” so they don’t have footage of feces all over his butt when we left the clinic (knowing his incision was so close to his anus)…even if it wasn’t, NOT OK. With his emergency surgery at Canyon Pet Hospital they informed me that he pooped a lot while he was under and encouraged me not to worry if he didn’t have a bowel movement that day or even the following…there wasn’t a speck of feces on him, he was completely clean, they literally cleaned him ..when I took him into emergency he smelled like actual ROT from his incision coming apart and how much blood and fluid he had bled out all over himself and everywhere else…but he came out completely cleaned by Canyons staff. On a previous phone call their Client Services Manager had also let me know that the front desk staff didn’t link some of the most critical photos (photos I had sent earlier in the day as he was actively starting to split apart)…leading to a failure to be contacted by them…I ended up calling them about 445p and he split open about an hour later. You can see in my email I broke it down into different time frames and said a lot of what happened, I tried to keep it brief but there was just so much-I was even let know that they had a huge staff meeting about Finn becauseee front desk staff never linked the photos (you can imagine how important that might be, no?) and I’d think maybe some other things we’re probably addressed like not having patients leave with feces all over. However, through all of this their Director, Dr. Sol, has remained firm in that all proper care was provided and that he would have done the same thing. Disgusted and repulsed doesn’t even remotely describe how I feel. I could have lost Finn and they quite literally didn’t even give two shits. It took him over a month to heal enough to be on the trails again, his back legs aren’t the same though. He’s still with me and that is truly all that matters, however save yourself the heartache and go someplace else.
