How to Save Money at WisCARES

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Well for 3 years I was happy with this clinic but recent visits have me searching for another vet for my Lab. After suffering an injury and showing symptoms of hip dysplasia I have had nothing but problems communicating with the staff. I don't feel anyone should have to explain what's going on over and over and over. I know my dog is fat, he was that way when I adopted him at 5 years old. Apparently nobody listened to me the first 100 times I explained that. Apparently nobody listened to me when I told them what my dog needed to be seen for several times in a row. There's definitely no discount any longer and frankly nobody wants to sit in their car for two hours either. Especially after paying that much money. I'm on SSDI and that doesn't mean anything you're still paying full price. I've been paying you like any other vet clinic and may as well pay for a comfortable place to sit if you're going to charge like everyone else. The poor girl that came out for my dog obviously had no idea why we were there. The person answering the phone doesn't pay attention. If you have no other choice okay but I'd suggest you find a clinic that actually keeps records of your pets care so you don't have to endlessly explain why you are there. Ridiculous that y'all can't do that. I was not impressed with the fact you had no record of previous visits nor any recollection of my dog's previous visits. Like I'd never been there before. I'll be going elsewhere for vet care.

I can only tell you how wonderful this place is. YoYo the vet student who worked with us was warm, caring, not to mention very knowledgeable. She is in her last year of vet school but was not afraid to ask the staff veterinarians for their opinion. Thank you for the wonderful experience and for helping my dog Bella.

We came to WISCARE for the first time on Dec. 20, 2024. My kitty was totally comfortable with the caregiver. It was relaxing. I was in the waiting visiting room and Tucker never made a sound. Our experience was very pleasant informative and staff was very caring. I highly Recommend WISCARE To anyone who has a need for low income, veterinary care.. This visit was the very best experience I’ve ever had in a veterinary clinic. Thank you so much for the fine job that was done. Thanks especially to Kristen. Diane Lincoln

We were so happy to have found this clinic for our cat, Gigi we thought maybe he had some bad dental problems but it turned out he had cancer in his mouth that would only be getting worse. It was such a very hard decision to have him go to sleep. But the room was more like a living room & I could spend as much time with him before and after.we paid our bill in the room so we could simply leave when we had to part &’not have to deal with finances at that time which was a very considerate idea! They wrapped him in a very soft blanket & we’re very loving to Gigi. It made me feel so much better. That they cared so much! & I got a card in the mail signed by each one of the staff saying how sorry they were for the loss our our precious Gigi. His ashes are ready to pickup now. They did paw prints for us too! Thank you so very kindly staff of WisCares!! We sure appreciate you & your support & kindness & compassion! Five stars for each of you!!

Used to go to Banfield Pet Hospital.. it became expensive… decided to give WisCARES a try. I am a little confused how this exactly works because when I did the I take they said it would be 15.00 per visit. When I went they charged me 15 extra dollars- totaling 30.00. Not to mention pill prices. I wish I could have gotten accurate information regarding prices. Not sure if they give baths or cut nails. That again, would be helpful information. It is nice that they give free dog food once a month.
