How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Tate and his team at Banfield! They took such amazing care of my pup Pepper during his dental cleaning and eye tumor removal. I was very nervous going in as Pepper does not do too well after anesthesia but the entire team made me feel reassured every step of the way. They were compassionate, professional, and treated Pepper as if he were their own. Dr. Tate explained everything clearly, answered all my questions, and the follow-up care was outstanding. Pepper recovered beautifully, and I am so grateful for the kindness and skill that went into his care. Thank you, Dr. Tate and the whole Banfield team—you truly went above and beyond!

Not a fan of any of the Banfield locations near or around Vancouver (Including Salmon Creek). This was my second time giving Banfield a shot, only to be massively let down again. At the end of the day it's not about me - it's about the health and wellbeing of my pet. When that's not being met and I'm paying anywhere from 60-80 something dollars a month on just a membership, 100% NOT OKAY. My first poor experience with Banfield was back in roughly 2021. My cat Hendrix had been closing one eye so I took him in to have it looked at. During our appointment they did eye drops to access if his eye was scratched, it wasn't so they sent us home. Roughly a month or two later I took him back in and the doctor said to me "oh and by the way, I don't think his heart murmur is as bad as the previous doctor had thought" I WAS ASTONISHED to say the least. I notified her that this was actually the first I was hearing of it and how disappointed I was in their lack of communication that has a direct affect on my animals health. Fast forward to 2024-2025 - I took in a stray elderly cat. I decided to give Banfield a second chance unfortunately. I signed her up for the highest available plan at the time because I knew she needed a lot of help and was willing to pay and do anything she needed to ensure her comfort and happiness. From the get go there were EXTREMELY DISMISSIVE regarding nail cutting, skin issues, and not to mention their repeated misdiagnosis of where she may or may not have arthritis. I ended up leaving, going to a different vet clinic where we received help almost immediately and I continued paying for a useless service through Banfield (they have year long contracts). Mind you when I took her to the other clinic they notified me that my kitty's nails were so long they were curling into her pads. Now WHY on earth would a vet clinic lie about trimming nails?!? Its one of the quickest services, lies like this led me to believe they were being dishonest about other factors regarding my cats care. Also the skin issues Banfield told me was just dandruff - yeah that was an infection. My cat was at the Banfield clinic multiple times a month the first 3x months I had her. I would bring up nails and skin EVERY visit. I did reach out to Banfield regarding their malpractice, after speaking to a couple sassy and again dismissive people I was able to speak to a higher up who was kind. It was like pulling teeth trying to heard - they ended up refunding me for only 2 months of service despite the fact that they swindled me for a full 12 months. I accepted the agreement purely due to exhaustion from having to work with them however I did not think it was an agreeable amount what so ever. So for clarity - Banfield off Millplain, Near Vancouver Mall, and Salmon Creek are not advisable if you love and care for your pet.

The entire staff at the mill plain location are amazing. They all treat my pets like they are their own; it shows they truly care about the care and concerns of our 2 cats. In the last month I've taken our 6 month old kitten in for: spay, microchip, pedicure, and two vaccine appointments. And our 6 year old cat in for: wellness visit, pedicure, chest xrays, and a dental cleaning. I'm a bit over protective especially with my 6 year old but since they build confidence in the care they provide, I felt 100% comfortable dropping him off for his procedure for the day, knowing he is in the best hands. Thank you for caring for Olly and Penny, Banfield!

I would like to express my gratitude to the staff at Banfield Pet Hospital for their patience and tender care in treating my dog, Courage. My canine companion experiences significant difficulty in adapting to unfamiliar environments. I am truly grateful for the exceptional care and support provided by the Banfield team.
