How to Save Money at Neighborhood Veterinary Centers - NASA

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my dog in on 5/4/26 for a senior wellness exam as a new patient. I was hoping for a thorough, head-to-tail evaluation given his age, but the exam felt very limited. The male veterinarian primarily focused on his teeth, and I did not observe a full check of his eyes, ears, joints, or a detailed physical exam. As a pet owner, especially with a senior dog, I expect a more comprehensive and transparent evaluation so I can feel confident in his care. I may have missed some parts of the exam if they were done quickly, but the overall experience left me uncertain about the level of thoroughness. The staff was polite, and I appreciate the visit, but I would have preferred a more complete exam and clearer communication during the appointment.

They had become very commercial oriented. I keep coming because 8 years ago they saved my dog's life after an accident, however the administration had changed and most vets too. This clinic used to be the best in the area and I don't think it is anymore...Today we had a long wait even though there was nobody ahead or waiting like us. The employees seemed distracted and one of them had lost a blood sample for another client...I might consider looking for a new place for my next pets, not for my current one because she is used to coming here and it is sad the place is not the same for the worse...

I am extremely disappointed with the care my dog received from this clinic. What makes this especially difficult to write is that we used to love coming here. The front desk staff has always been friendly, helpful, and compassionate. However, after changes in the veterinary staff, our experience declined significantly. From the beginning of this situation, communication was poor. It took five days for someone to review and discuss bloodwork results with me while my dog’s condition continued to worsen. During that time, I specifically raised the possibility of heterobilharzia because my dog had recently jumped into a pond, a known risk factor. My concerns were dismissed and that possibility was not seriously investigated. Instead, my dog was placed on medications that ultimately proved unnecessary, and we were given a very grim outlook regarding her condition. The delay in reaching the correct diagnosis resulted in additional veterinary expenses and unnecessary stress for our family while we searched for answers. When we eventually received the correct diagnosis elsewhere, I contacted the clinic to discuss my concerns and understand what had happened. Rather than acknowledging any shortcomings in the diagnostic process or taking responsibility for the delay in identifying the condition, the clinic became defensive. Shortly afterward, they terminated the veterinarian-client relationship and informed us that they would no longer see our pets. I understand that veterinary medicine is not an exact science and that difficult cases can occur. What I found most disappointing was not just the apparent failure to identify a condition that I had specifically asked about, but the lack of accountability, the dismissal of legitimate concerns, and the decision to end the relationship after those concerns were raised. Based on my experience, I would encourage pet owners to seek a second opinion if their pet’s condition is not improving and to advocate strongly when they believe something has been overlooked.

We love our team over here at NVC-NASA. This has been our vet for over 3 years now. Every time we come in, it's always a pleasure considering our fur babies may not be feeling well. They always tell us the pricing before testing, which is a huge plus. Both Vet Docs here have a keen interest in our pups vs. how much they can make off of them. Never pushy. This, along with attentive care, is why NVC will be our forever home. Thank you, thank you, thank you !
