How to Save Money at Thrive Pet Healthcare - McKinney

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is an absolute joke. The MEDICAL DIRECTOR Dr Carrie initially missed a wound in my cats mouth… and misdiagnosed with a virus that there was no way he could get….. once I asked for a second opinion she had it out for me……. The office mixed up my appointment and refused to see one of them bc I missed the first appointment. Finally after all of that was over and done with it was one of my pets neutering……. I had spoken to the office that previously my breeders cats have died from an allergic reaction to ketamine… the initial dr who was scheduled to do the surgery Dr Ravi refused bc “he felt uncomfortable” and they changed my surgery date to a week before with the medical director. I had no idea until I called them. When I saw Dr Carrie she was extremely rude and dismissive, she basically told me to either comply with the meds or “shop elsewhere no hard feelings” I was absolutely shocked I have never heard a medical professional act that way. 0 reassurance….. no empathy about my concerns. When I asked a the questions necessary like what reversal meds they had on hand she answered and I asked what availability she had she said she’s going to look and walked away. The tech came in 30 minutes later and said what I was waiting on…. When I told her the doc she looked shocked and said oh okay let me see.. Dr Carrie came back with that’s 1.5 months in advance. And if I wanted sooner that I had to drive 2 hrs to the other side of Fort Worth. They have staff rotating in and out of the clinic all the time and I can see why. EXTREMELY disappointed in the care, and shocked on the lack of professionalism and empathy. Do better.

The front office is exceptionally kind, they were very accommodating! The vet and technicians took great care of my two cats as well. We were in and out, but still received extremely thorough care. This is a great vet!

Sadly we had to put our beloved 16 1/2 year old sweet boy “Bruno” down due to kidney failure and other complications. We miss him so much but find comfort he is no longer suffering. The staff at Thrive made the process a little easier even though it was the hardest decision we have ever experienced. Definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a family oriented facility. They made us feel very comforted.

Thank you for taking good care of my baby. Your tests gave me the closure I needed to say goodbye to my best friend as his pain grew worse. I recommend this practice.

We brought our cat in and were able to get great care however, we were given a break down of the price in the exam room but when we got to the register it was about $100 more than what was on the break down we received in the exam room. The doctor had told us he was good to go then came back and said he was going to give him some fluids before we left because he was a little dehydrated. He never said there was a charge for the fluids. His labs came back and he has diabetes. We now have to get insulin and other items and we cannot get in contact with the vet because they are not open on the weekend. We were told Friday evening to do some research to find the cheapest option and let them know so they can send the prescription to the pharmacy. He needed to start the insulin right away since he is a senior cat. These two things are my only complaints. The staff and vets are extremely nice and caring!
