How to Save Money at Waterloo Vets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Waterloo Veterinary is easily the nicest vet facility in Austin — and it’s not even close. The space is beautiful, modern, and super high-tech, but what really stands out is the care. Every staff member I’ve met has been incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely kind. The whole team makes you feel comfortable the second you walk in. I feel really good knowing I’m giving Eros the highest level of primary vet care possible. Dr. Kingstad and Dr. Zee are hands down the best veterinarians Eros has seen. They’re calm, thoughtful, and amazing with him — and the only vets who have been able to complete a blood draw and administer his vaccines without him getting overly stressed, which is huge for us (many before have declined the blood draw because of my dog’s reaction which is honestly just self- inflicted trauma). The techs are just as great: attentive, gentle, and clearly passionate about what they do. You can tell this team truly cares about their patients and their people. Couldn’t recommend Waterloo Vets more.

My love runs deep for Waterloo Vets!! Dr. Ballis treats Sprout like she’s part of their own family. She always gets so much love and attention, and it’s clear how much the whole team genuinely cares about her. I never feel like “just another client” here. The whole team takes the time to thoroughly explain all of Sprout’s results to me so I feel fully comfortable and at ease. I feel so lucky to have found a clinic I can fully trust. I wouldn’t want anyone else caring for our little girl!

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Waterloo Vets. While we were out of town, our sweet Rosie suddenly became very ill, and their team immediately stepped in with calm, thorough care. They quickly got her X-rays, explained a confusing situation remotely, and then thanks to their thoughtful treatment Rosie was actually able to pass the obstruction without needing surgery. Their kindness, attention, and genuine compassion made the whole experience feel like Rosie was part of their family. We’re so grateful for their team! Rosie is King Charles Cavalier, they can have quite the health challenges, but we feel in good hands with Waterloo.

We recently adopted a puppy and had been planning this for over a year. We watched the Waterloo Vets practice being built in our neighborhood and hoped it would open in time! After hearing great reviews from dog -owner friends we brought our new pup there for her first exam and vaccinations. The facility is gorgeous and the staff are incredible. So happy to have such a wonderful Vet practice in Barton Creek!!

I had such a great experience here! I stopped in without an appointment after a scary moment — my dog and I ran into a coral snake while out on a walk, and I wasn’t sure if he’d been bitten. The staff was so kind and didn’t hesitate to help right away. Dr. Lacy Ballis was amazing — calm, friendly, and very knowledgeable. She checked my dog thoroughly, explained everything clearly, and really put my mind at ease. You can tell she genuinely cares. So grateful for how welcoming and professional everyone was. Highly recommend Dr. Ballis and her team! 🐶💛
