How to Save Money at Spicewood Springs Cat Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I started bringing my cat here after an incident at a different Vet that resulted in my cat becoming highly reactive and difficult to handle at appointments. The staff never got frustrated with her, and have been able to work with her without causing additional stress. I wish I had found Spicewood Springs first so that we didn't have to go through the trauma with the previous vet. We have also used their boarding services for our other senior cat who is on a strict medication schedule. It took a lot of stress out of our travel knowing he was in good hands. The staff has always been kind and attentive, and I would recommend them to anyone with anxious or high maintenance kitties.

Excellent staff! Have used the Dog location before and drive thru here for her prescription food. I decided to take in a 1 week old abandoned kitten for the first time a few months ago. They were extremely informative over the phone and friendly. The location is clean with a a drive thru pharmacy even open shortly on weekends. We did our third checkup today and first shot. The lovely tech even informed the doctor of our previous visits before hand. Extremely professional to do. I have never had a Kitten and probably wouldn’t have if this location didn’t exist and help guide me. Heidi and I highly recommend!

For the review scrollers looking for a real tried and true experience, please read my review, especially if you’re a “Crazy Cat Lady” such as myself looking for the best feline care in Austin.. I first found out about Spicewood Springs Cat Hospital funnily enough when my parents were in town and we went to Galaxy Cafe for dinner. My dad who’s from a rural state pointed out “ Hey, a cat hospital! They have those?” I was surprised to hear of one myself as most veterinary establishments I’ve taken my sweet girl to before, I felt that their care was more focused on dogs and that some vets were sometimes clueless on cat care. Literally the next day I brought my dainty dame Luna ( aka Lunafish, aka Capt Squeak aka The Feesh) to have a wellness check up as she’s going on 11 now and is approaching her Golden Girl years. We were introduced to Dr. Goldenberg and I myself having anxiety in general, you can imagine my anxiety for my best four-legged friend. I was so impressed with her patience with me and my fast talking, endless questions, her care of Luna, her expertise of feline and animal care that I’ve decided that that this Cat Hospital is THE place for my Luna’s care. As I’ve taken her to the dreaded Banfield for most of Luna’s life and then some other vet clinic in Austin who’s care and treatment of their clients was less than desirable, I have been always greeted by the caring staff at the front desk with warmth and welcome, the technicians are gentle and easy to understand with the veterinary jargon and very patient as well with the clients. Having worked in several veterinary hospitals and clinics throughout my life in my home town when I was a vet tech assistant, I’ve.. seen things lol. So that furthers my anxiety. Yet again I cannot say enough of Dr. Goldenberg’s patience with me and I love how she is receptive to feedback from her clients as well, instead of coming off as a know-it-all vet who talks down to their clients (looking at you Crestview) Of course I respect the knowledge of animal care with Dr. Goldenberg and her many years of experience as an exceptional Veterinarian and feline expertise. So I’ll end my incredibly long winded review with saying, thank you to all of the staff and doctors at Spicewood Springs Cat Hospital. Thank you to your endlessly patient receptionists for your patience with us crazy cat ladies and thank you to the excellent care from your technicians. It’s not an easy job and I know it’s rewarding when you love animals as much as the client loves their animal friend. I literally am baffled by the very few 1 star reviews from years past and am sorry for their not typical experience. Also for the review scrollers, ignore the “Thing 1” review. That is clearly a troll racking up Google points. I knows em’ when I sees em’.

They have always been really great with my cats and me. I am autistic, and the vets are really good about being patient and talking with me, because sometimes I have a lot of questions and I’m scared. It’s very helpful that they are patient with me and make sure that I understand. They also have treated my cats like one of their own, and are very patient and kind with them too.

The folks at Spicewood Springs are always kind and attentive. We have brought our pets to these fine folks for decades. Wouldn't take our fur babies anywhere else.
