How to Save Money at Northwest Austin Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They saved my kitty’s life! Dr. Eric Simmons and Dr. Everett Simons went above and beyond to diagnose and treat a rare ear condition in our sweet cat. Over several months, they dedicated the time and research to find out the root cause. Dr. Eric Simmons is clearly a “cat guy”, and his recommendations felt like what he would choose for his own kitties… he was always thoughtful, compassionate, and practical. He also made an outstanding referral to a surgeon when it was needed. Everyone at the office was kind, highly communicative, and worked to make the process as affordable and efficient as possible. The waits were short, they have kitty treats, their vet techs are phenomenal, and shoutout to Edna who helped be an advocate after surgery! Finding vets who understand cats, and are willing to go the extra mile, is rare. I am so grateful to this team for caring our sweet kitty as much as we do!

Our dogs have been going to NAVC for many years now. We've seen many veterinarians there and they're all very thorough and knowledgeable. What prompted me to write this review now is the visit we had today with Dr C. We've never met him before. He was so wonderful and thorough with our beloved dog. He took time to really listen and go over everything with us. Will definitely request Dr. C for any future appointments.

The courtesy, friendliness, assistance here was SUPER!!! Dr Boyd was informative, explaining my pets issues, which I didn’t know, what can happen & how to treat my pets condition. Further tests “could” be done, but not currently necessary, so Appreciated it. Completed visit with Dr Boyd & issued meds. Next few days, my pet is doing LOTS better❤️ Dr Boyd & staff…. Thank you.

This place used to be great until they went corporate. I used to take my senior dogs here because they cared so deeply and they really listened. Now it’s just checking off the boxes and doing what corporate told them to do which inhibits their actual care for your pet. Our Vet that we saw here left because of the corporate system and opened his own independently owned clinic. I suggest only going to independently own veterinary clinics where they actually care and listen to you.

I'm happy to say that I've had a wonderful experience as a first timer visiting this clinic. I just moved here a few months ago from Ohio, and had a minor medical emergency for my 10 year old cat (Big Boy). My previous experience with other veterinary clinics, has been very off-putting. Clinics that lie, upsell, push vaccines, push treatments, and try to keep you in the pay system for life with expensive food regimens. I was very relieved from the moment I walked in the door at Northwest Clinic. The receptionist was friendly, the vet tech was friendly, And Dr. (Eric?) Simmons was very helpful and knowledgeable. I was expecting to spend well over $1,000 and leaving angry. I wound up spending less than $500, With blood Labs, urine and fecal sample sent to labs, and two medications that had my cat feeling better in just 3 days! Dr. Simmons was kind, patient, knowledgeable, friendly, and did a wonderful job easing my fears and educating my mind. I will always trust this Clinic to give my pets the care that they need! Thank you
