How to Save Money at 6 Whiskers

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cant begin to express the level of gratitude I have for Dr. D'sa and Dylan. From the initial meeting, they showed immense care for my dog and took their time to ease her in to meeting them as new strangers--even winning her over with hot dogs. I had the misfortune of having to send my dog over the rainbow bridge and both Doctor D'sa and Dylan provided continued support and managed my expectations with helpful education and constant reassurance. They made a difficult time as comforting as it could be. They treated my dog as if it could've been their own. You can clearly see their compassion for what they do and a dedication to help our fur babies. I will not hesitate to consider them for any future needs. Truly a dynamic duo.

I cannot thank them enough for giving my dog such a great experience. On top of the convenience of being able to have them to come to the house, they are truly experts. I have a Belgian Malinois that didnt have the best prior experience at the vet, but the team at 6 whiskers was so patient, and calm with her.

Wonderful experience with the 6 Whiskers team. They were relaxed, thorough, and not rushed. They took the time to allow our dogs to get comfortable (as much as they would). One of our rescues can be challenging with vets and they handled him really well. This duo are truly animal lovers, so grateful to have found them!

6 Whiskers Mobile Veterinary is amazing! I was really in a bind trying to arrange moving my two cats to a new home. One of them needed veterinary attention and we simply could not get him into a carrier to take him to a clinic. Enter Dylan and Dr. DʼSa from 6 Whiskers. Their kindness and expertise turned a difficult situation into a much calmer, more manageable one. Iʼm so grateful for their help and would recommend 6 Whiskers to anybody who wants truly exceptional, compassionate care for their pets.

We are extremely disappointed with the care received from 6 Whiskers. They sounded confident when I made an appointment over the phone and that our visit was a normal part of their practice. We have two cats who haven't been to a vet before so they were getting a full checkup and vaccines. Upon arrival, they were very disorganized and it felt like making things up as they went. For example, they forgot to give our cat one of the shots she needed. The husband was particularly unprofessional, he kept telling us not to be nervous and if we're nervous the cats get nervous - when what was making us nervous was how they were scrambling to decide what steps to perform and forgetting things and the wife kept asking him questions and he just kept talking to us about nothing. They also didn't disclose the side effects of the vaccines they gave my cats until after they got them. They were supposed to come back for a booster shot but we did not feel comfortable so we canceled the appointment, and they immediately sent us vet records and basically dismissed us as clients, after I had paid over $1,000 for their "services". Now one of my cats, who was perfectly healthy before the appointment (and was confirmed so by their tests) is suddenly lethargic and experiencing pain in her leg, and when we contacted them about it they just acted like "it couldn't have been from us" and offered no additional advice or care. If you are thinking of using this service for your cats, I would absolutely not recommend 6 Whiskers.
