How to Save Money at Weems & Stephens Equine Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

April 2022 I adopted a mare that had cancer in around her eye. Dr Claunch worked diligently to save her eye and after a year of detailed care we directed the best thing to do was the remove the eye. I am happy to report he was professional and always honest in our care and allowed me to take part in deciding the best course of action, which as a professional horseman I appreciated a LOT! Almost two years after this procedure she is still functioning "cancer free" and teaching lessons and jumping with the best. I highly recommend this team and the care and knowledge they provide

I would highly recommend Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital to anyone who needs care for their horses or other equines. I took my donkey, Mikey, to the hospital after he suffered a laceration on his leg. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they took great care of Mikey. They were able to clean and suture the wound, and they also gave him pain medication and antibiotics. Mikey made a full recovery thanks to the excellent care he received at Weems and Stephens. I was particularly impressed by the knowledge and experience of the doctors and staff. They were able to diagnose Mikey's injury quickly and accurately, and they explained everything to me in a way that I could understand. I also appreciated their willingness to answer all of my questions. In addition to their excellent care, Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital also has top-notch facilities. The hospital is clean and well-maintained, and the stalls are spacious and comfortable. I felt confident that Mikey was in good hands while he was at the hospital. Overall, I had a very positive experience at Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs care for their equine companion. Here are some specific things that I appreciated about my experience at Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital: The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and compassionate. The doctors were thorough and explained everything in a way that I could understand. The facilities were clean and well-maintained. The price was reasonable. I would definitely recommend Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital to anyone who needs care for their equine companion

Dr. Sciba saved Gio's life and I'm forever grateful. They got us in right away, performed emergency colic surgery a couple hours later (approx. 1 AM), then I got a follow up call immediately afterwards to let me know he was up and in recovery. Dr. Sciba called me every day until he was discharged a week later. I visited daily to walk Gio and let him graze around the property. 12/10 stars from me.

So we have decided that they are so great, I’d love to make Dr. Claunch my own personal doctor. I have been fighting with misdiagnosis mistreated respiratory issues with my Mustang for 3 years now. I paid $600 just for a scope and antibiotics at one vet (not this vet). And got a scope, blood work AND an ultrasound AND a diagnosis AND a treatment plan that so far is working fantastic for $500. I’ve been fighting going out there because they are so far. But now I won’t use anyone else and they are an hour and a half away from me. My girl has been working and able to breathe again!

I may be a bit late in posting this review, but I believe it’s never too late to give credit where credit is due. Dr. Claunch is not only an exceptional veterinarian but also a truly remarkable human being. He treated my horse with such care, compassion, and professionalism—keeping me informed every step of the way with daily updates. His dedication and kindness made a difficult time easier, and I am deeply grateful for the expertise and heart he brings to the equine community. Thank you, Dr. Claunch.
