How to Save Money at Main St Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Me and my family have been bringing our dogs here for 15 years, I just brought my two dogs in for there annual appointment, spent 800$ on getting the both of them there mandatory shots and medications, among this stool sample kits. I was not notified of any time frame to return them by, there is nothing on the paperwork nor samples themselves which states that I needed to return them with in a certain time frame. My dogs appointment was at the end of June on the 18th, and I just brought their samples by today. A month and 10 days later. The front desk told me that they don’t accept samples if it is more than 30 days after the appointment. I let them know that I was not told this information and had already paid for the samples to be taken and processed at my appointment and showed proof of my paperwork and samples that I was not told a time frame. I want to clarify, the samples themselves are fresh I just collected them this morning, I’m not saying the samples are more than 30 days old but have just have returned past the 30 day mark which I was absolutely not made aware of. I asked for a refund and they declined. Very disappointed and upset with this experience especially as someone who has spent thousands of dollars at this vet for the past 15 years. I am updating this review because I decided to call the office and restate my fustration with the issue and let them know that I wanted it resolved and they are allowing me to bring in the samples without have to pay a second time. While this was upsetting that I had to call after coming in to resolve this appreciate the resolution so I don’t have to pay for something twice

All of the veterinarians and assistants have been caring and gentle with my dogs. Dr. Shaffer-Ray is particularly successful with one of my dogs that can be feisty and a bit of a difficult patient. Main Street doctors have cared for four of my dogs over the years.

My poor sweet darling Dolly has been staying with the Main St veterinary hospital and they take the best care of her they update me immediately about her since we had to bring her in it's been breaking my heart I go to pick her up and bring her home tomorrow but it's been a hard long rough journey but we couldn't have done this without them

I took my brand new puppy to Main Street vet & they were wonderful!! My baby was not feeling well at all and they put me at ease from the moment I got there from immediately getting us into a room since he isn’t fully vaccinated to discussing my budget before any procedures, medicine, or fluids were given. Holly was wonderful. She took his history and asked very thorough questions to really get a good understanding of what was going on. Dr. Birdwell answered all my questions, gave me all the information I needed to fully understand what was going on and what our next steps would be. I called with some questions the next morning and Dr. Birdwell came to answer them and I felt that they were truly concerned and determined to find out what was going on with my puppy and to get him feeling better immediately. The entire staff has been wonderful, especially as a first-time pet owner. Highly recommend Main Street Vet!!!

Main Street Vet is wonderful. Great vets and vet tech’s. I’ve had everything from regular checkups and emergency visits and they are patient, thorough, and keep me fully I formed through the process. My pup actually loves going to the vet- when I turn in the parking lot she gets as excited as going to the dog park.
