How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unfortunately, our first experience was a disappointment. We showed up for our appointment on time and were put into an exam room where we sat there for 30 minutes without anyone checking in on us or giving us any indication as to when we would be seen. This was a New kitty first appointment, no consideration was taken into account that we were first time clients with a new with a kitten. We seen plenty of associates at the front desk, in the lab just sitting there. Absolutely no customer service, support or Common courtesy. We will not be back, the “free visit voucher” come and get to know us incentive is garbage. The amount of money that I lost, leaving work and sitting there, the frustration of having to put a cat into the carrier deal with the Trauma it places on your animal, then be left in a cold empty room was definitely not worth it. You have a lot of opportunity to improve upon your service, know that I’ve seen how you operate I’m very relieved I didn’t actually let you perform any medical procedures on my kitten.

I have been taking my dog to Banfield every since he was 8 weeks old and everyone has been great Sonja, Dr. Raji and the rest if the staff. I feel like they love my pet just as much as I do because if the way they are with him, but recently my dog was injured by another dog causing his eye to pop out. This is the 1st time that I felt that disconnected, I called them to speak to Dr. Raji concerning his stitches breaking looking for advice on what to do and if this could cause more problems and Dr. Raji never returned my calls, I left 2 messages and it has been 2 days now and still no return call. This is very disappointing to me because we have been with them for almost 11 years now and I thought we had built a rapport with them. I'm high disappointed.

Overall I like the routine check-ups from Banfield. I like how well they communicate with reminders of what's due for my dogs and reminders of appt times. The only frustrating thing I have with Banfield is trying to get same day appts. Which is virtually impossible but at times is urgently needed. Or even a day or two later is very difficult to get. That is very frustrating and upsetting. But overall I give them 4-5 stars.

Both of my dogs go here. My older I’ve been taking to this location since she was about a year old, and this year she’ll be 10. Everyone here is awesome, from the receptionists to the vet techs to the vets. They’re so nice and caring and helpful! The people really make it a great experience. Just a note for Banfield in general- since I’ve mostly ever gone just for drop-off check-ups, I feel a slight disconnect with the vets, just because I don’t see them every time. I’d also like to see the back area where they take the pups, just out of curiosity. That’s another area where I feel a little bit of a disconnect, but I do understand that this system allows them to make more appointments per day which is very good for us! Photo of my younger puppy at his very first visit!
