How to Save Money at URvet Care Upper East Side (Midtown Medical Center is Open 24/7)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The whole staff here has been absolutely wonderful with my cat, Kylo! He loves the vets, techs, and front desk staff. Special shoutout to Tania for always starting and ending our visit with positive energy! Pic of a cozy Kylo made possible by their quality care. :)

This place is amazing. The vets are so kind constantly asking if you have any questions and explaining every single thing to you along the way. The receptionist Alli made my experience. From the moment I came in she was so uplifting making me feel like everything was going to be okay. Offered water, gave my dogs many hugs and kisses and constantly supported me along the way. Highly recommend this place thank you to the team and Alli you’re one of the kindest people I’ve ever met❤️

The people are nice but the lack of price transparency is insane. I have a 6 month old kitten that I was looking to get neutered. I called them and specifically asked for a neuter and the cost of it. The front desk starting breaking down the price saying that they had a promotion for a wellness check for first time customers as well as blood work that is needed and said the cost would come to roughly $265. I specifically asked if that covers everything including the neuter and they said yes. So I went ahead and booked an appointment. Come time for the appointment, I arrived and went through the general wellness exam and got quoted the wellness exam and the cost of the blood work being $265. I was confused because that was the entirety of what was discussed on the phone so I asked them. They said they can get us the estimate on the actual neuter by end of day (after the appointment). I pushed more and was able to have the vet to do an estimate on the spot. I then find out that the actual price was almost 10x the amount at almost $2000. I was so confused that I started questioning them that when I made the appointment I asked and had confirmation that total cost was roughly $265. They said it was a miscommunication. What was even crazier is that an employee came in saying that this “miscommunication” is why he instructs the front desk people to not give estimates on surgeries. That comment is actually insane to me because if I didn’t push to get the estimate on the surgery done, then I would have paid $265 on blood work and wellness exam only to then get surprised by an almost $2000 estimate for the neuter. I declined everything and ended up having to pay $50 for an unnecessary wellness exam (my kitten had one 2 months ago) and 2 hours of my time. I would like to clarify as well that I am not upset about the price. A business has the freedom to price their services whatever they want but the lack of price transparency and the strategy of not providing estimates or even a ballpark of prices of surgeries until after the cat is seen is insane to me. Update: I feel the need to provide an update given the business’s response. I would like to reiterate and clarify that I am not giving the poor rating due to the price. As I mentioned originally, the business is free to set whatever price they deem fit. What I don’t appreciate is the lack of price transparency. I understand that a formal estimate is done after a required exam by NYS law but that doesn’t mean you cannot give any ballpark or indication of what the customer should expect in costs. At that moment whether it was due to miscommunication or an employee telling me the wrong information, I had no suspicion that there was additional cost beyond the $265. So I could have very easily gone forward with the additional pre-op testing and would have put forward the $265 before finding out the true price. Even after pushing back, I still had to pay $50 for a wellness exam on a kitten that if it wasn’t for the neuter, didn’t even need one has he already had a full exam performed 2 months prior just to find out how much the surgery would cost. As an establishment that has probably done many neuters before there is a ballpark or an estimation based of historical data that can give some information to the customer. Even if the exam turns out that additional costs or price changes are needed, that is understandable but not giving any clue to the customer only to slap them with a $2000 estimate after they have to pay for an exam is not okay in my opinion.

I went here because I had an emergency with my multi Poo Buddy. The staff was unreal so professional and honest. They never over billed me and took care of Buddy like he was their own. It was two days before Christmas and my pup was so sick I was so worried but I was definitely in the right place at the right time. They are amazing and I can’t recommend them enough. Thank you for saving buddy’s life . It was the best Christmas ever knowing my pup was good.
