How to Save Money at Symphony Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat Muffin, dislocated her hip. We got confirmation from her primary veterinary on Tuesday. I called around other facilities to get price for surgery. Some places were charging upward cost 8K-- which is not economically unfeasible for my family. I called Symphony Vet to get a quote about amputation. Unfortunately, Symphony Vet doesn't give quotes over the phone. I spoke with front desk rep. Mathew and ask if there was any fees-- as I am only interested in getting a quote for surgery and will send over records. He told me " since muffin is a new client, a wellness visit is free. " So I promptly made appointment for Saturday ( 8/30/2025). I meet with the vet who was very kind and understood my situation. He provided a range of 3-5k for amputation-- which is still very expensive for leg removal. Sadly, I still didn't get definitive price. The vet told me today's visit charge is $108 . I was very confused, as this was never told to me by Mathew over the phone or this morning as I signed in. I was completing hoodwinked. When I followed up after the visit with Mathew, I was then told a different story. He claimed because he worked there for years he would never say that... I wholeheartedly disagree, because that is what was told to me. And it is on company's flyer. I refused to pay and he gleeful stated " Well, it will be sent to collections". Today was a complete waste of time. I do not recommend.

My 16-year-old cat was very ill, and every member of the staff was incredibly kind, supportive, and knowledgeable. They didn’t just take wonderful care of my cat—they took care of me as well. The doctor thoughtfully explained all of the options, which allowed me to make an informed decision about his care. I am deeply grateful for the compassion shown to us and cannot recommend Symphony Vet Center highly enough.

We've taken our two dogs here for almost a year now, and have been incredibly happy with the entire staff. The Veterinarians have all been exceptionally knowledgable, extremely helpful, and I also appreciate that they are a fear free facility. It was most noticeable on our recent visit when one of our dogs was anxious/sensitive about what was going on, and the team there didn't force anything, or do anything to raise his anxiety, but found alternative methods for achieving the same outcomes while making sure that our dog left with a positive experience. We've also been very pleasantly surprised on the cost of treatment, which is contrary to other vet experiences that we've had in NYC.

The team at Symphony is extremely friendly and reliable. They quickly offered me an appointment time when my cat was suffering from a sudden illness, while my regular veterinarian turned us away. I'll be sticking with Symphony going forward. I also appreciated how communicative they are -- the doctors keep thorough notes and send detailed outlines of the discussions at your appointment. Great service and very knowledgeable experts.

This is the third vet I’ve tried in the uptown area and the best by far. Dr. Ledner and Dr. Muller are so friendly, communicative, and reassuring. They’ve helped me handle a kidney issue with my senior cat, and also performed a dental cleaning and extraction for her. I’ve felt confident that my cat is in good hands during every visit, test, and procedure. I live closer to a couple of other vets, but the experience I’ve had at Symphony Vet has made the trips worth it for me.
