How to Save Money at Vetco Vaccination Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The visit was fine. The doctor was skilled and attentive. The problem was getting the actual medication. Vetco is supposed to make everything easier, but that’s far from the case. They gave me the incorrect prescription and also never asked me what brand of heartworm medication my dog takes before prescribing it, resulting in two weeks out and Petco.com canceling two of my heartworm medications, due to a prescription for a different heartworm medication. I called vetco’s “mobile vaccination team” and all they could do was tell me to take my dog to yet another Vetco clinic to get the prescription changed. Meaning I’d have to put my dog thru another heartworm test just to get their mistake fixed. No. That is not ok. On top of that there is no way to get a hold of the vet that “prescribed” the prescription- which was actually written by the person who checked my dog in and not an actual Veterinarian. This is a big red flag and not ok. The customer service is no help and claimed a supervisor will call me right away which has not happened. It has been two weeks since visiting the Vetco clinic and I have yet to get a prescription filled and so much of my time has been wasted on trying to sort this out. Avoid Petco and Vetco at all costs.

I’ve generally had good experiences at Vetco, and most of the staff are friendly and helpful. However, during my visit on August 5th for vaccine, I had a frustrating interaction with a male nurse (or possibly a vet) that left me disappointed. I arrived at least 5 minutes before my scheduled appointment at 3:55 PM. The vet and staff were still assisting the previous client — the dog was still on the table and they were still talking. I waited patiently, clearly visible to everyone. When I finally asked to check in, the male staff member told me they were closed, pointed toward the previous client, and said, “This is our last appointment.” I told him my appointment was for 3:55 PM and that I had been waiting. He insisted it was already 4:00 PM, then checked his Apple Watch — which actually showed 3:56 PM. Only then did he allow me to check in. Later, when I asked whether my dog was covered for Lyme disease based on her vaccine history, he seemed confused and unsure. I tried to explain, but he quickly said, “I don’t understand what you are asking,” without showing any patience or making an effort to help. His impatient attitude and the way he handled the situation made things unnecessarily difficult and uncomfortable. I felt dismissed and not treated with the same respect as other clients. It made me feel like I was being treated differently, and I couldn't help but wonder if I was being discriminated against.

I went to the 2nd ave and 52nd vetco clinic location today and I don’t usually write reviews but this vetco clinic was a very distasteful experience. The vetco staff were not interested in answering any of my questions, as I am not a vet I obviously will have questions. When I first got there and waited to talk to them and check in they completely ignored me without even letting me know that they will check me in, in a second. Secondly the vet assistant was very aggravated with any question I had and in generally had no interest in not only answering questions but providing a good experience. She scoffed and groaned at almost everything. I felt almost stupid asking questions. The overall petco staff was very nice however the vet and vet assistant make this a really distasteful experience for me.

The vet clinic area is literally just a table in the middle of the store. The vet and assistant were very standoffish and not welcoming. The vet administering the vaccines to my dog did not wash his hands before or have gloves on. He took a band-aid off mid-appointment and proceeded to use his shirt to wipe his hands. Very unsanitary. Would not recommend this location.

For Vetco: Doctors and Vet assistant, Dr. Alyssa, Samantha C, Alexander C., Jacey V. They were a great team. My Bluey goldendoodle did excellent here. Vaccination was perfectly administered, they answered my many questions.
