How to Save Money at Bond Vet - Kips Bay

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve had nothing but A+++ experiences with Bond Vet Kips Bay across multiple visits. Their team consistently goes above and beyond any expectation I’ve ever had for a multi-location practice, and even most independent practices, with a level of hospitality and empathy reminiscent of decades past. My first experience with this location was in 2022, when my older cat became seriously ill while I was out of the country. My sister brought him in, and although they weren’t equipped to treat the complexity of his condition, they were upfront and honest about their limitations. They made an initial diagnostic, clearly explained why they couldn’t provide a full diagnosis, never tried to upsell anything, and communicated thoroughly every time we needed a report. They even created a same-day emergency appointment and provided medication so he could eat again. It ultimately took three specialty vets and surgery to diagnose his punctured intestine, an issue that mimicked cancer, which shows how difficult this case was. Bond Vet was focused entirely on getting him help, not making money. My second experience was exceptional. I was recently fostering a terrified, semi-feral stray cat (now known as Waffles) and needed help moving her from a kennel into a carrier. After calling several shelters, rescues, and vets, Bond Vet, specifically Rose, was the only one who said yes. Rose is truly extraordinary. This cat would hiss even when I fed her, so the idea of moving her safely felt impossible. Not only did Rose brainstorm solutions with me, she actually went out of her way after hours to stop by and help in person. Waffles was running circles across the grid of the kennel walls, not even on flat surfaces, swatting, hissing, the whole nine yards. Somehow Rose still managed to get her into the carrier. Her personableness and compassion, her willingness to help when she absolutely didn’t have to, her skill with a cat as intensely defensive as Waffles, her going above and beyond for someone who wasn’t even yet a client, and her genuine care for her work and animals are the reason I immediately scheduled an appointment for our younger cat the next day. That visit was fantastic as well. Dr. Prescott, Rose, and the vet tech were all amazing, and they even thoughtfully took a commemorative photo of our cat with her stats since it was her first vet visit. Dr. Prescott was a complete sweetheart and was very thorough in her assessments; she even called us directly herself to update us on our cat's lab results. Because of them, we’re bringing our older cat back for his annual in two weeks. We’ve always used independent small practices, his most recent vet before we moved to NYC trained at the Royal Veterinary College (iykyk), and we were hesitant to switch given our cat’s extensive medical history—especially after encountering so many clinics that were either incompetent, clearly just after our money, or both. Bond Vet Kips Bay falls under none of those. After moving from out of state, we had trouble finding a vet where we truly felt comfortable. Meeting Rose changed that. She’s not only a spectacular representative of Bond Vet, she (and Dr. Prescott during our visit) also reinforced our trust in the practice and made us feel confident enough to bring both of our cats here. We’re truly grateful!!

I have a family vet I use outside of Manhattan but I had an emergency with my dog. I was able to walk into Bond within 30 minutes of needing to. They saw me earlier than my given appointment and were amazing. Dr Moo was kind and patient, he listened to me and then explained everything in detail more than once to me about the medication. I admit I doubted a “chain Vet practice” could be this good. The price was also great, I couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much!

I have a 15+ yo dog and a 4-month puppy. The Bond Vet Kips Bay team is fantastic. The vet, the nurse and Rose at reception are super caring and attentive with my dogs and always take as much time as I need to clarify questions. A million times better than their previous vet!!

Always great service at Bond Vet! The vets are always so sweet to Mel and always make me feel that he is in good hands. The transparent pricing and various treatment plans ensure that I don’t ever feel like I’m being ripped off or overcharged. Happy to have found a great vet for my first cat!
