How to Save Money at Oak Ridge Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First I want to say I’ve never had a problem with any staff that work for Dr. Barros. They are always kind and attentive to my two young cats and the only reason this place isn’t getting 1 star. However, I will not be returning due to Dr. Barros. I have always thought he was rather rude but I can get over that for good medical care. I draw the line and ignoring my concerns and acting like I’m overreacting. I took my sweet 2yr cat there initially to be seen about her paw that was visibly red and swollen from over licking. I was told it was nothing but contact dermatitis from a small piece of litter that was stuck to her. He cleaned it off and said nothing needed to be done. I voiced my concerns again and asked when would I need to get her reassessed and was told “well you’re a nurse, you should know”. So I trusted him and took her home only for it to get severely worse to the point both back paws were bleeding and she was pulling her hair out from stress. I took her to another vet where my concerns were taken seriously and she is now on three different medications for a serious infection. I could maybe see not wanting to jump to antibiotics however he offered me NOTHING, no steroid to help with the itching, no topical cream, no antiseptic wash to help keep it clean. My concerns were dismissed and I was made to feel stupid. I was even scoffed for having clay clumping litter (clearly he thought that was the issue). I don’t know why I have to defend myself at my vet appointment, but I let him know unfortunately it is the only thing my cat will use, it isn’t by choice we use that stuff. Overall, I’m thankful I did not take her back there for a second assessment and she’s receiving wonderful care elsewhere. As a nurse, I wouldn’t recommend this place to any cat owners.

Tev Barros is one of the best and most competent Veterinarians I’ve ever interacted with. His staff is also friendly, caring and top-notch. My wife and I take all our animals here and will continue to as long as we are in the Triad. 🙏😀😀

We brought our senior dog in this afternoon for what we thought was an emergency. The staff and doctor were absolutely amazing with us and our dog, Emmitt. I will be switching all of our animals over to this vet because they are not only knowledgeable but also have great communication skills, and are just nice people who love animals. 10/10⭐️

Just my opinion: Great techs that are kind and empathetic. Doctors are good but constantly talk about vaccines and things I don't believe in, as good vet care, that are toxic: Distemper and vaccines. I know the medical industry pushes these things with fear or the worst that can happen and it's hard to get around it. Through the advice of the dr., I allowed to do the flea topical treatment, along with the bordetella and distemper together. I had shared my concerns for single doses and spread out, for my dogs treatments, as a precaution, because I learned through research, combo vaccines and also adding flea meds was risky. The doctor added it's fine and recommended to get it all done at once. I regret it now and now my dog seems to have an autoimmune issue and gut sensitivity. My dog is approx 18 months old and developed a rash on groin area immediately, after the vaccines , then a couple days later, was throwing up with traces of blood and bloody diarrhea that would not stop. My dog ended up in emergency for $1500. later, trying to determine reasons. When you combine drugs you can't 100% prove which one is bad. I wish we could trust vets, but I am not so easily trusting anymore. Now I have to watch his food and keep low fat diet. Of course, they never give any real reason this happened, but we all know, vaccines and flea meds are nothing more than pesticides and toxic and we think our vets are knowledgeable and caring to the danger of using them. If they are, why not have single dose drugs as an option? When I told them about his reaction , the doctor brushed it off and said since it was a couple days for reactions to take place, they won't take it seriously, it being due to the vaccines. He was a perfectly healthy 1.5 yr old dog with no stomach issues prior and never had rashes from the open farm food, as I read all labels for where food is made and what's in it. It seems it's hard to find a vet who will do titers tests instead of always pushing the next vaccine appointment. I for one love Dr. Judy Morgan and Dr. Karen Becker online vets. They teach you best ways to feed your pup and also how to help more naturally instead of toxic animal care and help you understand the dangers involved before you do drugs. I feel this is a good all around vet clinic but if you are like me, concerned with combo vaccines and want single doses spread out, I don't know where to recommend they do that.

We are always impressed by how patient and kind the staff and Dr. Tev are with our animals. Our dog is very shy, so the staff let her meet Steve, and Dr. Tev made accommodations to lower her stress level. We recently had to euthanize our 17 year old cat, and Dr. Tev walked us through the whole process. Everyone was so understanding, it really helped reduce the trauma of losing our cat. Their prices are also very reasonable. Can't recommend them highly enough. Pic of our boy Walter in his younger years. Thank you for everything.
