How to Save Money at North Elm Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I wanted to write a review for Dr. Reyes - she has been an exceptional vet and has taken wonderful care of our two little dogs. Every doctor we've seen at the practice has been fantastic though. We've been bringing our dogs here for six years and have always had a great experience. The entire staff is caring, compassionate, and responsive, especially when I've needed prescription refills or urgent appointments. They've always done their best to fit us in during emergencies, which has meant so much to us over the years. We're moving and will be very sad to leave. This is the best veterinary practice we've ever been to, and we are incredibly grateful for the care they've provided to our pets.

Jumper aka Queen had her vet appt today. She had a full checkup. Shes healthy 💚 she got her nails done and she received 2 vaccines, that didnt make her very happy but she got over it quickly with treats and compliments on how pretty she is. This visit wasnt just a routine check up for us, our son Kayden rescued Jumper, we sadly lost Kayden at age 20 last November to gun violence. Jumper is an extension of Kaydens heartbeat and means everything to us. As we were checking out we had the best surprise that warmed our hearts so much.... our Milos obituary was displayed at the front desk. Dr Reyes took such good care of Milo and ensured his comfort to the end (2024) we always knew if we got another pet we would seek her out to care for our pet. As always we felt the compassion, love, and individual attention. Wonderful staff from the front desk, techs, and Dr. Thank you all so much. Highly recommend this team to care for your fur baby!!

A little disorganized but they're the best hands down in Greensboro. Dr. Coates is the salt of the earth! Plus staff is very understanding and works with you to help get your furry baby the best care! I have a German Stephard and crazy about her and they show me they are too!

I brought my puppy in for a routine spay and initially thought everything was fine, but the experience quickly went downhill. After drop-off, I received unexpected calls asking for additional procedures that were never discussed beforehand, which felt confusing and inappropriate, especially while my pup was already in their care. Communication was poor, inconsistent, and at times unprofessional. When I tried to get clarity, I was met with dismissive and unfriendly responses from staff and the veterinarian, Dr. Lemyre. I lost confidence in their care due to the lack of transparency and the way concerns were handled. At pickup, the environment felt uncomfortable, and my request for an apology was brushed off by Dr. Lemyre. To make matters worse, I was falsely accused of behavior that never happened. It’s upsetting being falsely accused—based on apparent prejudice—of using profanity toward staff, which I was not true. Despite this, Dr. Lemyre never offered an apology and instead suggested I could just come in and anyone can evaluate my puppy’s surgical site in two weeks. Hindsight, she has been treating my puppy, and I can also have my records in to take my puppy elsewhere. Dr. Lemyre’s biased opinion was very blatant and apparent. Overall, I left feeling disrespected, misled, and extremely disappointed. After paying a significant amount, I expected much better communication, compassion, and professionalism. Meanwhile, my puppy has been whimpering in pain since we arrived home earlier this afternoon. I am searching for a place to take her for evaluation that will treat her tonight, but most importantly acknowledge that I am a human being. I would not recommend this practice.

My Experience with North Elm Animal Hospital and the Loss of My Dog, Lucas I am sharing this difficult story to help other pet owners make informed decisions about their animal's care. On July 16, 2025, my dog Lucas underwent TPLO surgery at North Elm Animal Hospital in Greensboro, NC. He had injuries in both hind legs, but the clinic chose to operate on only one leg. Despite the known instability in the other leg, no brace, support device was offered. I was also not made aware of the full risks involved in placing full weight (93 pound husky) on an already compromised limb during recovery. Thirteen days later, on July 29, 2025, Lucas collapsed and had to be euthanized. I have received no follow-up communication from the veterinarian who performed the surgery or the primary on this case, Dr. Claudia Sims, DVM, or from the clinic itself. As of today, no explanation or outreach has been made regarding his death. I left a message with the front desk on a Monday afternoon. No call from the primary doctor. I called back the next morning and the doctor was not in that day. Another doctor had to put my dog down on Tuesday morning. Still never heard from the primary doctor. 13 days after surgery, almost $6000 in cost and all I have to show for it is a dead DOG. I’ve submitted a request for Lucas’s full medical records and am in the process of filing a formal complaint with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board and possible other legal means. This has been a deeply painful and confusing experience, and while I understand that no surgery is risk-free, I believe that I was not fully informed of all risks or options available to protect Lucas — especially considering his condition involved both legs. I trusted the professionals involved, and I believe I had the right to know more — and the right to be contacted after the tragic outcome. If you are considering this hospital for your pet’s surgical care, I strongly urge you to ask detailed questions, request all possible options (including conservative treatments like bracing), and ensure that post-operative care and follow-up are clearly discussed and documented. This post is not intended to defame, only to share my experience so that other pet owners may be empowered to advocate for their animals more fully. UPDATE: Aug 2. The clinic did send a sympathy card today.
