How to Save Money at Guilford College Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They saved my dog Castor. These vet techs and vets handle every impossible and avoidable case 24hrs every day of the year. Driving from Reidsville to the only 24 hour clinic in the area when my dog was showing signs of bloat was the most terrifying experience. Every place we called at 9:30pm was closed, didn’t have a surgeon, was full, or didn’t have an overnight staff. In desperation during the drive (going 100mph) I reached this clinic. She gave the address immediately, planned his intake, and dealt with emotionally distraught pet parents with grace. Upon arrival the surgeon, Stephanie Henry, immediately came out and gave us a price for the surgery, removed the gas buildup to save him some time, and started surgery. Full case of GDV, our boy‘s stomach had flipped. Two hour surgery was completed in one hour, we were updated as soon as he was stable and waking up. They cared for him for 24 hours after surgery. No complications, no spleen issues, no necrotic tissue, a perfect surgery. The surgeon hugged me as I cried telling her how thankful I was. She reassured me that it is a random thing that can’t always be prevented by being careful with food/water intake and play. She allowed my partner and I to see him, and when I mentioned our younger dog in the car (who refused to leave his brother) she invited him to see our boy too. She said “well he wants to see his brother is okay too”. The level of care and compassion was incredible and I will always hold Stephanie’s kindness in my heart for saving our boy. He is recovering incredibly well, his surgery site is flawless and precise. Highly recommend the vets here, they deserve compassion and funding for the good they do!

Our family first came to Guilford College Animal Hospital during one of the hardest moments we’ve had with a pet. Our corgi, Booty, had to be put down, and the provider we saw at the time handled the situation with incredible compassion. They helped us quickly, clearly explained our options, and allowed us the space to make the right decision for our family without any pressure or judgment. It meant a lot to us during such a painful moment. Because of that experience, we decided to continue our care there when we later adopted our new puppy, Lily. Since then, we’ve been seeing Dr. Samoska, and he has been wonderful. He patiently answered all of our puppy-related questions and was especially thoughtful and understanding knowing we had recently gone through the loss of Booty. The entire team has been great to work with. The office staff is always helpful and responsive, and they’ve provided documentation whenever I’ve needed it, even when I’ve misplaced it and had to ask more than once! We’re very grateful for the care we’ve received and feel confident bringing Lily here. Solid team all around.

so we went to this vet for a minor issue, first, of course it’s money. How are you paying filling you out once we informed we would be cash paying the Doctor State stated his prices do not change. We said OK. He told me my cat would not be able to survive anesthesia because he has left side heart failure. We never told him that we had had blood work done six months ago and already knew our cat was very healthy so it struck us odd but being very stressed and 1 o’clock in the morning we were like just save him please. He basically implied we needed to pursue other options that would’ve left us with his ashes versus a fix the issue. Finally, I said you know what I already know. This is a circus act so at this point you have my cat you have my money just perform the procedure and if the heart has issues, I’m sure there’s things you can do to start it back. Needless to say five days later after using the medication’s prescribed, my cats health declined rapidly. He would not eat. He was sleeping non-reactive. This was a direct side effect of the medication’s. Thank God we went for a second opinion. When we went for the second opinion, she did test observation and said she saw none of this present and he was very healthy. This was a simple thing and also not the first time she’s heard of this place and people that are able to go get a second opinion find out their animal has lots of life left. Be very careful who you choose if you love your pets like I love mine. These are my children, but how does this place keeps the doors open. I have no clue, our cat is doing great and going back to his normal self now that we have gone to a vet that actually cares about animals especially cats . Do not expect anything five star about this place. The pricing is not great and the bill doubles from what they quote you to the end. And they will create issues like a mechanic so you have to come right back and spend more, but it is what it is 2026 all about the Almighty dollar

DO NOT take your pet here if you care about them. I took my son's sick cat to them on a Friday night and was told she needed blood work and an x-ray. I truly felt that she did not need an x-ray, so I refused it. They did her bloodwork and told me she was anemic, but to actually diagnose her they needed an x-ray that would cost $280 more. I refused the x-ray (which turned out I was right, we didn't need it) and took her home. On Monday I took her to my vet and he requested the blood work from Guilford College Animal Hospital. He called me right after he received her blood work and said all he had to do to diagnose her was look at what they sent to him. Her blood sugar was 300! Guilford College Animal Hospital NEVER even told me her blood sugar was high! My vet said she was diabetic and Guilford College Animal Hospital knew this from THEIR blood work. She also was NOT ANEMIC! Her pancreas was so severely damaged she passed on her own at my vet. I have called multiple times and get told everything time a manager will call me back. It has now been two weeks and NOT a single call back from them. I am truly disgusted with Guilford College Animal Hospital. I wish I would have taken my son's cat somewhere else. The fact that they push x-ray's to diagnose something they already had the answer to is disgusting!

I have been going to Guilford College Animal Hospital for about 4 years with my dogs and cats. They have been amazing for emergencies, courteous for wellness exams, and compassionate when I had to have one of my dogs put down. Dr. Samoska was a big part of helping me get through my soul dog's euthanasia. They gave me all the time I needed before, he explained everything to me in a soft voice, and they let me stay with him for as long as I needed after. Dr. Samoska sat on the floor with me for the procedure, and the techs were emotional as well. You and your pet are cared for. The prices are more than some other places, but it's worth it to save on emergency costs when something unexpected happens.
