How to Save Money at Carolina Veterinary Specialists Greensboro

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First off, the staff were incredible. My puppy Chunk saw Dr TJ Muse. I have had many years with multiple vets and this man was the absolute best of the best. My baby didn't have a happy ending, but he had the absolute best care possible, and I am very grateful to the staff and everyone who made his last days pain-free and loving. Medicine is learned, but love can not be taught, and this entire facility showed us nothing but love.

We are beyond grateful for the care and compassion shown to us and our dog last night. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with kindness, patience, and genuine concern. The veterinarian took the time to thoroughly examine our dog, explain what was happening, and make sure we understood every step of her care. What meant the most was the empathy shown not only toward our dog, but toward us as worried pet parents. We never felt rushed or dismissed. Our dog was treated gently and with so much compassion, which made an incredibly stressful situation so much easier. It is clear that this veterinarian truly cares about animals and the people who love them. We left feeling reassured, informed, and confident that our dog was in good hands. We cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, kindness, and dedication. If you are ever in need of a vet who treats your pet like family, this is the place you want to be.

I called in advance to see how long the wait would be and the person said 2-4 hours. I show up with my dog and there isn’t a single person in the waiting room waiting to be seen. I asked why do they have a 2-4 hour waiting period if no one was there to be seen and she said it was because they were short staff… only 3 total people working. After waiting 3 hours another person brought their dog and they were seen before us. I went to the desk and asked when we would be seen and she said that the staff and vets were in the middle of shift change and it would be another 45 minutes.. ridiculous. After I complained again, we were finally taken back to the room and seeen after waiting 30 mins. The vet came in for 5 minutes and left. We waited a few more hours and our dog was sedated in the meantime for X-rays. We were then moved to another room as the room we were currently in was needed. So we were taken to a different room and our sedated dog was brought to us. He was completely knocked out he looked like he was barely breathing. 45 mins later a front desk girl came in and said ok! Let’s get you checked out and we said what? We haven’t even gotten the information on the xrays or what the plan is for him. After a vet tech came in and said it’s arthritis, here’s pain meds, and follow up with his regular vet. Since they gave us a narcotic, they gave us a paper prescription to take to pharmacy. We took it to the pharmacy and they couldn’t fill the order due to the wrong DEA license. We called the vet back and said we needed to try another pharmacy and that the other vets there would not re-write a new prescription. After reviewing my dogs case with family that also work in the vet field they said that the imaging was terrible and non-diagnostic. All in all - this was the worst vet experience of my life. I would never take my dog here ever again. A few hours after we left, our dog continued to have pain and we went to another emergency vet who reviewed the X-rays and also reported that they were TERRIBLE and she could not see anything as well and had to redo them. She was shocked that they even allowed those X-rays to be in my dogs chart. Stay away from this place!!

My husband and I had to hospitalize our puppy unexpectedly and the staff was absolutely amazing! Dr McAllister was the best along with all the other staff. We received regular updates and our puppy was lucky and made it through. It would not have been possible without this facility. Pricing seemed fair based on services provided and that it’s 24/7 facility. While we hope not to return we certainly would if needed.

Our dog Cooper was here for 3 days from heat stroke. Most of the staff were great however finding out three days in and 12k dollars later that they were not equipped to care for our dog was disheartening. It’s easy to google what to expect when a dog has heat stroke as it’s easy to google the treatment. A vet should be well aware of what could happen and what the dog needs and I believe they were aware. Why did you not refer me two days ago to North Carolina State? I feel once my dog was stable and before his organs started to decline would have been appropriate time to discuss sending him to a level 1 facility that could have offered my baby what he needed in a timely manner. Today the vet seemed like all she wanted to do was get us to sign the papers and say goodbye to our dog. No hope at all however after putting our dog down, I have read up on his illness and he had a 60% chance of turning it around at North Carolina state vet. I regret taking her advice. If your animal is in critical care, transfer them to a facility that can provide the care. When cooper was moving around and standing would have been a good time to transfer him. Had she not been so doom and gloom and spoke an ounce of hope we would have invested the 18k or more in proper care. You couldn’t put a price on my Cooper At the least, then I could say I’ve done all I could. Time is of the essence. Make sure you don’t waste anyone else’s time or money when you know another vets office has the facility to provide adequate help.
