How to Save Money at Burlington Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is my 5 month old German Shepherd Lunaa, our visit to Dr. Upshaw was spectacular. The doctor was so calm , gentle and professional. Overall a great experience with very nice staff members. Thank you to everyone at Burlington Road Animal hospital. The fees were reasonable. This will be our go-to facility in the future as Lunaa grows, happy and healthy . J'on Palmer

Burlington Road animal hospital will now be the Wellness care facility for my fur baby, dog 🐕. They are professional and reasonable in there fee schedule. They are obviously animal friendly. Burlington was referred to me....however, I notice other posts about service so I was extra mindful to take the time and exchange pleasantries with the staff - just as with others, we often get what you we give.

Healing Hands & Hearts By Heather “healinghandsandhearts”

I absolutely love this place and Dr. Upshaw! I almost don't want to tell you how great it is because I'm afraid I won't be able to get an appointment. We were in between vets & my cat had her first appt. scheduled but she got sick first. No problem he got her in that very day 😱. I couldn't believe it. I have never let a vet put a needle in my cat's bladder for sterile urine. I always had to lock her in a room & catch it myself. Took a whole 3 minutes for him to express and get it clean catch. Amazing! Then it came time to bring my new stray in and he was just as wonderful with the mini poodle as he was the cat. The poodle goes in for a teeth cleaning at the end of the month & then it's one more cat to go .

Always great food here. Most recent visit, William was the server. He is also a cook there. He made great suggestions and was super friendly. Who knew potato soup could be SOOO good.

Took my boyfriend's dog their last year. We had went there a couple of times, with our German shepherd, but this time it was different. Dr. Upshaw told us that Pepper had Addison's disease, but come to find out, that was a damn lie. We were told that Pepper was going to have to have a shot costing $140 a month, for the rest of his life. We got Pepper the shot twice and it did nothing for him, so we took him to another vet and I am so glad we did. The vet told us that if Pepper had Addison's disease, that not having the shot for over a year that Pepper would have already died, because we only let him take two shots and that was last April, so he lied. Misdiagnosing our pet is a disgrace. Come to find out. Pepper had heart disease and heart worms. So now we're gonna have to spend all of this money with a real vet, so that we can cure our dog. I know that the price is way below the other vets, but don't take your pet there. If you love your pet, you want.
