How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Volz is a great vet! She talked through all possible reasons for my cat’s mysterious puking, actually explained her thinking and reasoning for getting certain tests done, and gave me great suggestions to try at home. Her suggestions worked too, my cat is doing much better! - one star because my first visit was a drop-off situation, which I was not made aware of prior to the visit. I didn’t even know that was a thing, but now I know to ask

I reached out to Banfield due to a move (and a long drive) as I needed to get my 2 cats’ vaccinations up to date and I also wanted to give them a sedative for the long drive. I had explained that one of my cats was a rescue cat and was extremely difficult to handle in stressful situations but the people working here put me at ease. Needless to say, my cat did give them a hard time but I was able to pick up both cats in a couple of hours and hit the road with them, stress-free. Thanks to this location and for them being super-accommodating; I would highly recommend any pet owner to bring their pet here.

Amazing place! Very respectful! Make you time even if they busy. They care a lot about your pet. If the pet has some anxiety, they let you wait with the pet. They gave my dog a booster shot when he attacked a raccoon. Very good doctors. They call every time they finish spend their time taking care of your doggie. 💜💜❤️❤️ always recommend.

Our experience at Banfield Pet Hospital in Troy was horrible. My wife and I brought our 6 month old Alaskan Malamute Ace here for a wellness check and rabies vaccination. During the intake process the the the tech suggested a series of other vaccinations. We inquired about the cost of each additional vaccine. We decided Banfield's price was too high to do all the recommendations of the tech. We asked the tech for a list of her suggested vaccinations so that we could get them at a more affordable veterinarian. Whenever we denied the recommendations the tech began grilling my wife as to why she is so anti Banfield, to which my wife had to explain to her that she's not anti Banfield just attempting to be frugal with our out of pocket medical costs for our furry baby. After that exchange the whole interaction went downhill. For some reason the tech wanted to take Ace out of the examination room to go do the examination in another room. We've never experienced this before. At every doctor's or vetrinarian's office that we've visited the examination take place in the room with its namesake. So we politely declined her insistence on taking him to another room and requested that he be stay in the room with us. The tech agreed and went to call the doctor. After a short wait both the tech and the doctor entered together. My wife asked the tech a few questions about pricing on microchipping and Banfields wellness plan. Meanwhile the doctor played with our ace for a moment but oddly never spoke a word of greeting to us for an uncomfortable amount of time. Eventually my wife broke a brief awkward silence with a greeting for the doctor. The vet then reciprocated the greeting and started the exam. We informed her of miscellaneous information about ace and answered her standard questions about his health. After a quick poke scared Ace he recieved his rabies vaccination and ran to his mommy. The doctor then sent the tech to retrieve paperwork but on the tech's way out the door the doctor told her to also get a microchip scanner. Then when the tech returned she used said scanner on my dog as if we hadnt just asked about the price of microchipping. I can only assume she scanned our dog because she suspected him not to be ours. I felt so insulted and low . I felt like we were being treated like common criminals. What reason could they have to suspect anything of us. We brought our dog there to receive care. We were being responsible in every way. We had given them our AKC registration number for Ace and handed them his papers prior to this implied insinuation. We also have a 15 month old female Alaskan malamute named Kai who's file they pulled up earlier during the visit to compare shot records. The only reason I can suspect that we received such adverse treatment is because we're an African-American family bringing our dog to 2 Caucasian veterinary care workers who may need to read their own company's website about diversity and inclusion. It's 2024 and we don't encounter such overt adversity often. This felt especially egregious because it was completely unprovoked. We choose not to confront those ladies that day based on what was a shared unspoken suspicion. We didn't want to be seen as "the angry black family" in the artificially polite environment we found ourselves in. I would however be remiss if I didn't somehow express my distaste at the treatment my family received at this business.

Worst place ever. All they care about is their money. My dog had a cough and they put him on antibiotics for a week before vaccinations were given and instead of drawing blood to see if white blood cells were at the level they’re supposed to be. Instead gave him all 5 vaccines which two he was not even due for and said it should not be an issue. Two days later he became very ill and I took him to the ER he had collapsed and stopped breathing on his own. They kept trying and trying at the hospital. Even the hospital I took him too was shocked that no blood was taken before my dog had vaccines especially because he was coughing and was given antibiotics. All they did was assume kennel cough with no test. They of course took all the money and charged me for their dumb wellness plan which killed my dog due to their negligence. My dog could have still been alive. We take our pets to vets because they’re supposed to be more educated than us. Unfortunately that’s not the case, I wish I knew better. Mind you I did keep asking if they can take blood work to see if anything is going on, the lady at the front desk kept saying that’s not how it works. I even called to complain and they even agreed that I’m not wrong but of course they will cover themselves and stated blood work is not the “typical protocol” MAYBE IT SHOULD BE IF A DOG WAS GIVEN ANTIBIOTICS by your employees” they also rush you. Have no respect for your time money, and pet. My dog was only 1 year and was so happy and healthy. It all happened so quick… when they did his test at the hospital guess what? His white blood cells were disappearing… hmm I wonder why? Maybe you should of taken blood work instead on injecting 5 viruses in his body. His body was obviously fighting something. I hope you guys get my point. But if your dog has any symptoms small or big or even none please have ur vet do blood work before vaccines. Even with humans we’re not supposed to take vaccines when we’re sick. No care what so ever. I miss my dog so much he didn’t deserve this. Left me with a broken heart and 3500 in debt because of this. Thank you Banfield!
