How to Save Money at Jefferson Animal Hospital Fern Creek

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I could not be more pleased and grateful for Jefferson Animal Hospital. Dr Nau and the staff are always smiling and welcoming. They call Delilah by name. The love and care they give her and is unequalled. Dr Nau called me personally to check on Delilah and tell me test results. That doesn’t happen everywhere. Thank you so so much for everything.

I brought my dog in for an ear infection. The staff here were all very friendly. The waiting room was nice and everything was clean. The vet I spoke to was knowledgeable and seemed to really care about my dog. The way she and the veterinary assistant took care of him, I could tell they love working with animals. I will be returning.

To begin with, when I initially called to see if my injured dog whom was just hit by a car could be seen. The lady that answered told me not to even come, that they didn't have any staff and a dog had just coded. I walk in and there are at least 10 employees. Not sure on titles but obviously not understaffed. Right from the get go, I was lied to. Then as we are being emotionally extorted because, they knew by looking at us, that we don't have alot of money. Then the vet tech looked me straight in the face and lied for the second time, saying she didn't know what was wrong. They did. She was back there for over an hour. My dogs health information and critical facts of her condition were withheld. We offered to pay the 189 but since, we didn't even know what was wrong with her and didn't have the 650.00 deposit, she didnt matter. They knew and stood there and lied because of money. The small amount of information you all had old of been told to me so I could have at least tries to find away to help her at home. They do not care about your pet or your feelings. I understand this is a business and money has to be made to stay functioning, but how can you do this line and become emotionally unattracted to the animals you were educated to help. 10/10 I would never recommend.

I bring both my fur babies here for all their needs, and always I have a great experience. The staff are very attentive and knowledgeable and the doctors are calm and not rushed to get you in and out, and really listen to your concerns. Our recent addition to our family is a bit mouthy and doesn't like his feet messed with and terrified of the vet. When I scheduled his appointment to get vaccinated and have an exam I was so nervous! I was afraid of how he would react to what can be a stressful and scary situation. I should have never worried. They scheduled me for an anti-fear exam, which is slightly more than a regular exam, and they went very slow with him. He was given treats, belly rubs, baby talked, they respected his dislike for his feet being touched and avoided it, and not only was he tail wagging and showing off like I'd never seen before the end of his exam, but he was also able to get all his vaccines without any ruckus or fear through smart handling and their anti-fear training. I was so impressed!! They have done my older babies dental and all of her exams, and I have to say, I would drive an hour out of my way to continue going to this clinic. The staff, the doctors, the care, it's all worth it.
