How to Save Money at Blair Doon Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Honest to a Higher Power! The staff were so nice and caring my dog was literally at deaths door, my little girl Zena Bean was so sick, they paired up with P.A.L,s and got her in at first light, they prepared me for the worst most dogs don't not survive a closed uterus infection , plus she was 25 pounds over weight and that made it more complicated. My wife left me the morning before and then Zena got sick, they took her in operated and 3 1/2 hrs later called me, Zena had made it through surgery, her uterus literally falling apart in their hands the infection seemed into her body, not knowing why she also had a twisted intestine that caused bowel blockage. If she made it for 5 days she would be OK. I told them when my wife left she trashed my home badly, they did not hesitate, go ahead and clean it up, make it safe and sanitary for her and I did ,it took me until 5 days later atc330 a.m. I finished and guess what they called and said she was doing great but she was not having kennel time, she wanted out to give love and appreciation to all staff with kisses, she was ready to come home. I can't even explain what I felt when Zena Bean saw me and just picked and was trying to jump on me, I had her in my arms again, you see I am 64 and now alone, no family, all passed, no friends all in Seattle, Zena Bean and my two little ones Bubba Joe and Daisy Mae are all I have,I never had children so these gift from GOD are my babies, my family,my world and now we are all together again. They didn't give up on her ,they could have put her to sleep but along with P.a.l,s the bill was covered. Between E.R visit with her and Uber along with meds I had nothing left but hope and thankfulness. Thankyou Blair Doone ,the staff and all at P.A.L.,s what a Christmas gift . To my new found friends Much love and respect, you gave me peace when i had none, you gave me hope when all failed, you gave me my baby back when i was sitting here literally watching her die, 10 people at apt complex i asked to help with ride ,no go. 911,wpd,wfd. All said sorry , but you guys said we will do this and you did. From the bottom of my heart and the warmth of my soul I am indebted to you, and I sincerely ♥️ thank you. My faith in humanity is back, my calmness restored and you all are angels for real. GOD BLESS ,Happy Holidays forever grateful The Troyster Troy, Zena,Daisy and Bubba send our hugs and love and smiles.

I've used Blair Doon Veterinary hospital for over 20 years. They have treated our cats, dogs, horses, and donkeys. Many of my fur family members have been humanely euthanized due to sickness or old age. They are always compassionate during those difficult times. I feel like they are my second family. I would definitely recommend them for anyone looking for a Veterinary Hospital in Southeast Wichita, KS.

Blair Doon Veterinary was recommended to us by several family members and friends. We have 2 nine year old golden retriever sisters. Two months ago one of them, Serah had a lump literally, appear over night. We also have a 13 yo brother and sister, mix. We decided to allow our Vet we have used for years, to administer Chester a new arthritis injection medication. We were warned if there was an underlying neurological condition he could die. Three days later Chester had a stroke. We called our old vet and was told to bring him in. When we got there they asked if we wanted to be with him when he was euthanized. Yes. Then it would be at least a two hour wait. Our precious, loyal... Buddy. Chester was in pain. Stroking and having seizures. Scared, shaking... We decided to let him go without us. We could not let him suffer a moment longer. We went home. Empty. Sad. Such a wrong ending to such a loyal companion. We still has his sister and the Golden girls. Serah's cancer was going to kill her next. What were we going to do? The day came to allow us to show Serah how much we love her. With the heaviness in our heart we were still feeling about how we had to say goodbye to Chester and that he was with strangers, alone, scared. We called Blair Doon. As my husband went in for the paperwork I saw a tree. Serah had tried her hardest the last 8 weeks to scoot herself under the trees, sun herself. Sit with us and the family pack. A tumor on her hip may have stopped her from walking but, it didn't stop her from enjoying life. Wouldn't it be nice if we could say goodbye there? And that's exactly where the Vet asked if we would like to sit on a blanket. Serah's head was on my lap, the sun dappling thru the trees, a soft Kansan breeze. Serah, Princess Serah from day one, wanted off the blanket. We helped her off. She immediately relaxed. She may be a princess, she's not a snob. She wanted to feel the cool, damp grass under her. We talked, laughed, cried, stroked her curly golden locks. It was the most peaceful, calm and serene goodbye. We left knowing we absolutely did the very best for Serah. At some point that night, we both realized Blair Doon Veterinary had not only given us the gift of showing Serah how much we loved and cared about her, they also gave us some closer on our Chester. We did our very best for Serah. We did the best we could under the circumstances for Chester. And because we've found the truly caring and empathetic Vets, techs and office members of Blair Doon, none of our other pets will ever get good enough. They'll get the best, Blair Doon Veterinary. I don't even know how to thank them. I believe we should be watchful and caring stewards of all God's creatures He's placed for us as companions. I'm so grateful that I can now be comfortable and confident in the medical staff that we use for them.

We switched vets this year and I couldn’t be more happy we did. They have been so welcoming and kind to our 2 dogs. The vet will take their time with you and answer your questions. The vets and the staff have been so friendly, caring, and compassionate.

Always helpful and caring and they get you in as soon as possible. I was helped by them with a go fund of theirs to help a cat have a dental procedure. It helped the cat and I out by making it more affordable so she can have it done. Much appreciated!!
