How to Save Money at VCA Blum Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m not one to typically write reviews but thought this one was worth sharing. Our dog got gastroenteritis and we took her in for a sick visit. We saw Dr. Sheehan who was absolutely wonderful. She really listened when obtaining our dog’s history. She gave us multiple treatment options based on her lab results. She didn’t pressure us either way and let us form our decision as to how to proceed. She was very thorough, patient, and friendly to our dog who can be very nervous at the vet! Thank you Dr. Sheehan! Also Tanner, our vet tech, was so great with Sammy. Highly recommend VCA Blum!

Blum has become our most trusted vet in Chicagoland. Our dog had multiple medical issues and every single person in the clinic always took us seriously and supported us through it. When it was time to say goodbye, the clinic got us in same day and let us take as much time as we needed. When our veterinarian returned from maternity leave months later, we received a hand written card sharing her condolences. I have never received nor seen such sincere care. When my husband and I moved to the suburbs, we continued to drive to Blum for years knowing that our dog would be cared for exceptionally. Highly recommend.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Blum Animal Hospital with my beloved cat, Tygrys, and I must say, my experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt welcomed and assured that my pet's well-being was in capable hands. Dr. Lindsay Creger, the attending veterinarian, immediately struck me as a remarkable professional. Her straightforward demeanor and extensive knowledge instilled confidence in me right from our first interaction. Despite my initial belief that Tygrys was suffering from an inflammation of his canine tooth, Dr. Creger wisely advised me to conduct a blood work for a comprehensive understanding of his condition. Regrettably, I didn't heed her advice initially, but I quickly realized the error of my judgment. As it turned out, Tygrys's ailment was not solely related to his tooth, as I had presumed. Dr. Creger's insight and expertise led to the identification of other underlying issues that could have gone undetected without her thorough examination. I am immensely grateful for her guidance and wish I had listened to her recommendation sooner. The dedication and genuine interest shown by the entire staff at Blum Animal Hospital toward Tygrys's health were truly commendable. They went above and beyond to ensure his well-being and provided me with regular updates on his progress. It's evident that they genuinely care about the pets they treat, and this level of compassion is invaluable to pet owners like myself. Based on my experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Blum Animal Hospital to anyone seeking exceptional veterinary care for their furry companions. Dr. Creger's professionalism, coupled with the hospital's commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate service, has earned my complete trust. I am grateful for their outstanding care and wouldn't hesitate to entrust my pets health to them in the future.

I've held off on reviewing Blum Animal Hospital, but after receiving yet another appointment reminder for our dog Penny, who passed away in December 2024, I felt it was time. We took our golden retriever to Blum for almost 10 years. The first several years of routine care were fine, though we noticed frequent staff turnover and rarely saw the same vet twice. Around age 5 or 6, they began recommending sedation medications for each visit due to anxiety, even though she had never been nervous or aggressive. For a clinic that promotes being "Fear Free," relying on sedation as the main solution seemed concerning. When Penny became seriously ill in 2024, we struggled to get timely diagnostics or even returned calls from Blum. It seemed that once we needed something beyond the typical annual exam or preventative care, they were totally unavailable. I understand that they need to contract out other services (for example ultrasound imaging, etc) but they were not willing to work with us on scheduling that in a timely manner. We ultimately sought care from two other local vets—both of whom were responsive and compassionate (and confirmed that she wasn’t anxious or in need of sedation for exams) while helping us establish a diagnosis and a care plan. Even after notifying Blum via phone of her passing, we’ve continued to receive appointment reminders 8+ months later. If you’re looking for basic preventative care and don’t mind seeing a different vet each time—this may be the clinic for you. But if you’re looking for consistent, compassionate care throughout your pet’s life, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. We definitely will if we bring another dog into our family.

Blum Vet is a great place to bring your pet. We’ve been going here for 6 years now after moving to Chicago and have watched their continued growth and enhancement. Scheduling the appointment online was a breeze. There’s a cat entrance and dog entrance, with half-walled waiting areas that eases any stress your pet might otherwise have from overstimulation. There are also hooks on the reception desk (see photo) to place leashes if you need them. As part of our visit, my cat received a complimentary toy and was given lots of treats. The care that Blum provides is stellar! The staff are extremely attentive. During our vaccination visit, they checked my cat’s weight, teeth, musculature, nails, ears, etc. and vocalized observations and status on his health. If you can, book your cat’s next visit with Dr. Hudson.
