How to Save Money at Medical District Veterinary Clinic at Illinois

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After extensive research upon moving to the city 3 years ago, we chose Dr. Ana Valbuena. She is an excellent and highly competent USDA certified veterinarian who keeps up with the latest research and methodologies in her field. Dr. Valbuena’s bedside manner with our anxious dog (see below) has made routine vet visits a breeze. She is the ONLY vet my dog has ever liked and has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure our dog’s comfortability from the very first appointment. She throughly answers any questions we have. The support staff and vet technicians are also incredible! It is very easy to schedule an appointment as someone always picks up. Medication is available immediately. Staff are responsive to emails. Their text system sends timely reminders. The waiting room and exam rooms are pristine. I especially appreciate that Medical District Vet Clinic is affiliated with University of Illinois and not private equity investment. We have found their prices to be competitive yet fair. They do not suggest erroneous treatments and are transparent about costs. We go out of our way to take our dog here and it is 100% worth it for the quality of care received.

Thank you so Much for being So Kind! Doesn’t always have to be so hard and you made it so much better you helped me help Coco cross the rainbow bridge and I’ll never forget how kind you were and you didn’t have to be

Dr. Hampton and the team at Medical District Veterinary Clinic are incredible! They fit our 6 year old dog with an infection in last minute and treated us with so much kindness and patience. They took the time to explain everything and made sure our pup felt comfortable the entire time. We’re so grateful for Dr. Hampton’s compassion and expertise, and for the entire team’s support!

I started bringing my cats here in the summer of 2023 and have only had good experiences. My cats are my life and I get so anxious when anything about their health pops up. The staff and vets here have been very kind, professional, and thorough with my three cats. Today I brought my kitten Yuan Yuan home from her spay, and she is doing really well. Thank you so much Dr. Barragan and nurse Crystal for taking care of her!

I’ve been coming here for my two dogs’ checkups, exams, vaccines, etc., and it’s always been a great experience. But today I was really disappointed. I had an appointment with a tech for vaccines and nail trimming. While I was there, I asked if they could do a sanitary shave. They said yes, and since I usually do it at a grooming place but was already there, I figured why not. Everything seemed fine until both of my dogs came back with a really bad sanitary shave, especially in the back. At checkout, I politely asked if that result was normal because my dogs have had this done many times before and never looked like that. The front desk person was kind and offered to take one of them back to fix it, but also mentioned that this isn’t a grooming center. When my dog came back, it looked even worse. I don’t know if the person just didn’t know how to do it properly or did it out of frustration, but the result was honestly terrible. Later at the dog park, several people asked what had happened to Brisa because it was so noticeable. I get that this isn’t a grooming center, and that’s totally fine. But then they shouldn’t offer this service at all. Now it’ll take months for the hair to grow back, and I’ll probably have to pay a groomer to fix the look. Really disappointing experience this time. (It looks way worse than in the picture)
