How to Save Money at Hyde Park Animal Hospital -Stony Island

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a wonderful experience at Hyde Park Animal Hospital. My cat was diagnosed with stones in his ureter. He was scheduled the following day to correct his urinary function. He is urinating with no problems at this time. I give praise to Dr. Narvaez and caring staff on my initial visit and Dr. Williams who performed my cats procedure, and staff for watching over him for 2 days during his hospital stay. Nothing but gratitude for all of them. Caring and compassionate with our other Loved ones ❤️. God Bless 🙏🏽

I’d like to send a special thank you the staff and vets at this location. Both my dogs Sir Ellington and Paris were patients here. This year we unfortunately lost them both. Sir Ellington suffered from Congestive Heart Failure and collapsed trachea. Both progressive conditions I believe common in Yorkies. The care he was provided sustained him throughout the remaining years we had with him even as we changed vets due to relocation and I just want to thank you for taking the time, completing the test, and making needed modifications to his regimen that truly got it right. Although we were cross county I was actually planning on bringing him back during his last rough patch because I wanted him to be seen by the team who were most successful at his protocol but he didn’t make it. It took me a while to write this and I can’t fight back the tears. They both were so loved and will be dearly missed but I hope you all continue the great work you are doing because they are not pets. They are family. Thank you team.

I had a generally good experience with this clinic in the past (the vet techs are so nice and great), but felt really let down in a recent critical situation. When I first brought in my two young sibling cats, I asked if it would be possible to do an early spay/neuter, knowing the risks of them mating. I was told they don’t fix cats until 6 months unless necessary. When my female 5 month old kitten went into heat for the first time and was mated by her intact male sibling, they refused a spay, even though pregnancy at her young age is more dangerous than a spay in early heat. I was also told they don’t do pregnancy terminations, and that the only option was to separate them for 6-8 weeks until they’d be willing to do a spay, which does nothing to eliminate the risk of pregnancy if mating has already occurred. They offered no other solutions and were completely unwilling to be flexible on their policies despite the potential health risks for my pets, and their website advertising flexibility in special/emergency situations. The price was also incredibly steep— over 4x the cost of what I ended up paying at a different clinic (who also emphasized that early fixing was the more responsible choice at this stage). I left feeling like my concerns weren’t taken seriously and wasn’t offered real support to protect my cats’ health. In fact, I believe they prioritized their own “image” and policies as a clinic rather than their patients’ wellness. This may be the right vet for some people, but if you have intact cats or urgent reproductive concerns, you may want to ask detailed questions first. I will be taking my cats elsewhere moving forward to a place that is more willing to prioritize their patients’ needs and safety.

While the staff is kind and pleasant to work with, our elder cat received subpar service. Refills for Rx would take 3-4 weeks, and appts for urgent care are at least a week out. Twice we had to take our cat to the ER bc they couldn't see him in time. 1st time ER saved his life, but the 2nd time it was too late, and our cat died within 15 mins of arriving to the ER bc HPAH didn't have any appts until a week out. I will never ever take another pet here when they are better vets out there who understand the need to provide timely med refills and make room in their schedules for emergent issues. Disgraceful 🤬

Never bringing my cats here again. I brought both of my cats to be seen due to excessive scratching and hair loss around their ears. The first veterinarian they saw prescribed them itch wipes. When I brought them back for a follow-up they scheduled me with a different veterinarian (unbeknownst to me ) who sent us home with a clean bill of health after seeing the improvements in my cat's skin. When we got home, my cats immediately started scratching again to the point of bleeding. I had already expressed my concerns at the veterinarian because I felt like her follow-up was not thorough enough but I was dismissed. When I called the vet back and explained what had happened less than 30 minutes since they had been seen, They told me I had to reschedule another appointment with the first veterinarian and pay full price. At this point, I had already given them over $400, money that I did not have being that I was unemployed at the time. Because I did not have any more funds for them to be seen again after the vets negligence, my cats have been wearing cones and scratching for the past 7 months whole I've been trying to find at home remedies. I'm just now able to save up enough to take them to a new veterinarian. Thank you for all your amazing help Hyde Park animal hospital!!!!
