How to Save Money at VCA Edgewater Shores Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Vca is very compassionate, and they know their stuff. They are so good with our puppy George. They were amazing when I had to put down my dog of 10.5 years. Couldn't ask for better. Just brought George today to have his nails done. George is a tough dog he doesn't like to be restrained, the girls took him in the back and the girls all loved on him and the girl cut his nails and he was great for them. They have such a way with George. Thanks ladies!

Had to put down my 13 year old cat, Stella, today at Newman's Vet in Edgewater. They were the nicest, most compassionate team I have ever encountered. Jennifer and Ashley (spelling?) went above and beyond during our time there. They fit us in as soon as we called and helped make the sad experience much easier. I will always take my pets there from now on. Very professional and a great price for services.❤️

Thank you VCA for being there for us. All four of my boys. Buddy, Sammy, Tucker & Roscoe. Yup have another pup. Thanks you especially for the care for Buddy .My oldest & when you knew & didn’t say that his time was coming I understand we had to let go. You got in him on appointments as needed with whatever issues that were going on with him. He was struggling for a long time. I want do a shout out to Crystal who called me & knew the instructions I had as we had plans the following day. Buddy had a seizure that day and we couldn’t continue the on the agony anymore for him. It’s always difficult to make the final decision, but know that we were gave Buddy peace to go run again in the sunshine of the mountains. To the staff at Edgewater VCA we so much appreciate you for your kindness and compassion. I want especially say how special you make the goodbye room so very special. It was not a cold room on a metal table that he passed away, he was allowed to pass away in my arms. Thank you from Lee & Michael DeNauw.

Bless your hearts for being there for me and my 12 yr old sphynx cat TobyLove this past Saturday afternoon right before your office closed. He was in a sudden medical emergency crisis with advanced HCM and and throwing a thrombosis embolism blood clot and CHF difficulty breathing. ( He was on palliative care for advanced HCM , CHF, CKD, spindle cell cancer tumor and on 5 different heart medications since November by my vet who was closed ). I knew I had to be his voice to give him his angel wings. (One vet close by was open and refused to help him , after I explained the dire situation and details. The vet said NO to helping me give him peace and dignity when he needed it most . *** I called your Newmans Edgewater office , it 15 minutes before you closed 4/26/25 this past Saturday. Through my tears explained my boy's emergency, medical history, and needed to give him his angel wings . Without hesitation, you told me to bring in my boy. . Your compassion and care will always be remembered. Thank you for helping me do right by him with wings of dignity and peace. Hugs to Heather, Sarah, and Scarlett who drew me a beautiful heartfelt colored picture of a rainbow and icecream with stickers . Scarlett added a big colored purple heart with a yellow halo around the heart on her colored picture after I shared with her I called TobyLove my strong boy warrior and he loved to give Tobylove kisses. Scarlett was a shining light in a darkest moment this past Saturday. I will forever be grateful for all the care and compassion. sharing, Years ago your office, again it was a Saturday, helped me with my other Sphynx who had passed at home on his own terms during the night. I called your office, again, on a Saturday as it always seems to be, and asked to bring him in for a private cremation. Your office did not hesitate to help me when I was in tears with his sudden loss heart related. Same thing on a different Saturday with my mom's cat Charlie a stray she took care of and he suddenly got his wings . Bless your hearts for the compassion to do the right thing. Thank you for being there with care and compassion , each time was near closing and you always went out of your way to help when I needed it most with my babies.
