How to Save Money at VCA Rock Creek Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After today’s visit if I could give zero stars I would! We have been bringing our pets to VCA for more than 14 years. Today we had an appointment for our 13 year old Chihuahua. When we walked in we were told we did not have an appointment quite rudely. I showed her my confirmation email and she told me that we did not have an appointment and she did not know what happened. (we also received a text message confirmation too). She then went to the back to, “speak to the vet” and when she came back she told me again we did not have an appointment no apology no explanation no nothing. Please understand there was no one else waiting. Two people had checked out while I was waiting so I know for a fact at least 2 exam rooms were empty. So, why not honor the appointment? We left so upset. And when we got home I was looking at her VCA profile and there was even an invoice already established for today’s appointment! Makes me feel like they no longer want us as patients! Fine we will take our dog somewhere else! Our confidence in this place has obviously waned. We have been a long standing customer taking 3 dogs here over the span of 14+ years and thousands of dollars spent to be turned away like trash! Why not call us and make an excuse if they no longer want to treat our dog? Or be ethical and state that you no longer feel you can be an effective Dr ? This is such a sad situation. We were hoping to see this through to the end but I guess this will not be the case. We will find another vet moving forward!

I’ve brought my pet here several times and overall have had positive experiences. The hospital is clean and the doctors and assistants have been great in the past. That said, my last couple of visits haven’t felt the same. There were longer wait times, and during my most recent appointment the communication felt limited, as the assistant seemed hurried and she not very welcoming. She was a bit overbearing and made it hard to feel comfortable asking questions. I understand that busy days happen, but for the cost of services, I would expect a more consistent experience. I’m hoping this was just an off couple of visits, but I’m concerned with booking appointments in the future.

We brought our dog to VCA Rock Creek Animal Hospital in May for an ear infection. At the first visit, they prescribed ear drops—but our dog wasn’t comfortable with us applying them each night. We brought him back a week later, and they said they had a “better solution”—a one-time drop in each ear after a cleaning. Sounded promising, but the experience was awful. Dr. Saint-Marc wouldn’t even touch our dog. I had to hold him down and do all the handling myself. I don’t mind being involved, but there was absolutely no bedside manner. Both times, the vet showed zero compassion—it honestly felt like they weren’t an animal person at all. Those two visits ended up costing us nearly $600 for exams, cytology, ear cleaning, and two rounds of medication. And here we are in July, and our dog has another double ear infection. This time, we went somewhere else, where the care was far more compassionate—and it only cost $160 total. (Image shows today's visit infection) If you’re any kind of animal lover, you know our pets are family. And if you truly care for your family, VCA Rock Creek is not the place. The experience felt transactional, cold, and ultimately ineffective. We will never take our dog back there again.

We have been with this vet hospital for 10 years and they never disappoint. The office is clean, the office staff is friendly and efficient and the doctors are always professional and knowledgeable. We have also used them for boarding and for grooming and have always been happy with their services.

I brought my cat, Elvis, here for his very first check-up, and the experience was wonderful. The veterinarian, Ethan, was amazing, so kind, funny, and gentle with my cat. He really made the visit comfortable and stress-free. The doctor and the rest of the staff were also incredibly caring and patient, taking the time to make sure Elvis was well cared for. I truly appreciated how understanding and attentive everyone was. Both Elvis and I had a great experience, and I would highly recommend this animal hospital!
