How to Save Money at St. Augustine Regional Veterinary Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was frantic when my baby magic came up to me with a deep gash on his arm. Dr. Pokorny and the amazing staff stitched him back up and took great care of him. He's healing well and I'm so grateful for this team and mel the tech that took care of him overnight for showing him love while he was hurting!

I wanted to express my HEARTFELT gratitude to Valentina.. Justin.. Lisa and Henry .. who were the angels besides Amanda who had found ‘Baby Girl’ abandoned.. extremely neglected.. and in need of freedom from the pain.. suffering she was in.. for god knows how long before Amanda had found her. I volunteer at SAFE.. pet rescue.. and heard the cries of this dog .. another volunteer had mentioned there was a dog.. matted.. covered in feces.. you couldn’t see this poor dogs eyes.. she (as you couldn’t truly tell she was extremely matted in feces). She just cried.. I knew where to take her.. this incredible place is a god sent to our animals.. truly a staff and place where they honestly ‘care’ about the animals.. and would not turn away one in such a need of help as this one was.. her story was heard.. they knew she needed freedom from the abuse and neglect that she had been living.. these beautiful souls helped another.. with genuine love and care .. I have taken injured sea birds here before.. and I must say how grateful I am for this place.. I can honestly say.. you are in thee BEST hands with the staff .. they care about the animals.. and you.. the compassion we received today.. the time we were given to be with ‘Baby Girl’ as she was transitioning over the rainbow bridge meant very much to Amanda and I.. ‘Baby Girl’ knew she was loved.. she mattered.. and was cared about.. her final moments were those of genuine love for a soul who wanted and asked to be heard and cared about.. and she was.. Thank you Valentina.. Justin.. Lisa .. Henry and Amanda.. I was so very blessed that Amanda came to SAFE today.. and that I knew where ‘Baby Girl’ was going to get thee BEST CARE… Rest in peace Baby Girl…. You are FREE YOU are LOVED.. YOU MATTERED.. YOU were HEARD…. ❤️ I wanted to add .. Amanda had first taken ‘ Baby Girl’ to another vet before she googled SAFE.. she came up from Palm Coast to go holiday shopping.. and was not very familiar with the area…. The place she found ‘Baby Girl’ was a spot she likes to go to just ‘BE’ .. the first vet had only scanned for a chip and turned her away.. And today 12/21.. a day after we brought in ‘Baby Girl’.. I was walking the beach before sunrise.. and spotted one of the larger brownish seabirds just sitting in the water.. I watched as I was walking that he was not moving when the tide was coming in.. as I approached him.. and spoke.. he was unable to walk properly and I could tell something was wrong as well with his wings.. he allowed me to pick him up.. and as mentioned above.. I had brought other injured seabirds in.. they had also took in ‘Olly’…. This morning I was greeted by Lori.. who was also amazing…. Thank you once again for your kindness.. compassion and care for our animals and for those who love them.. we appreciate YOU..

Thank you Dr. Pokorny and the wonderful staff! We made the gut-wrenching decision to put our movie star boy Oliver down last night. Dr. Pokorny went above and beyond in every possible way, even running last-minute tests to see if his condition had approved. We could tell she was full of love and compassion. Oliver passed peacefully in a very comfortable, ambient setting with his loving parents by his side. Thank you for making this bearable for us.

Me and my sister took her Chihuahua Chloe in late last night for cluster seizures. Dr. Gradle and Zoey the vet tech were phenomenal and the lady at the front desk was awesome. We were greeted warmly and with care and compassion and they took us right in. Chloe spent the night in ICU while they gave her anti-seizure medicine and thankfully as of 3:09 today she has not had another seizure. They forwarded all of her test results and medical records from the hospital over to our regular vet for follow up. If you have an emergency with your pet your fur baby this is the place you want to go. These people are totally awesome and they truly love your fur baby just like it was their own. I can't thank them enough for their caring, compassion and medical knowledge, they totally Rock! Sending blessings to all the staff and members of this wonderful facility.

Thank you very much to all the staff at this wonderful place. They have compassionate hearts and a truly caring spirit. My dog could no longer be saved, but they did everything possible to make her passing dignified. Our last moments together will remain in my heart for a long time. Thank you for your support.
