How to Save Money at Russian River Veterinary Surgical Service

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Rottie went to them with a dislocating patella. They did the surgical procedure on her but on her check up she needed a prosthesis also. We took it slow but the results are amazing. She is full speed with no side affects. As far as the staff, they are amazing and so welcoming. I wouldn’t hesitate to take her back if ever necessary or one of my other girls. I can’t thank them enough.

Our 6 yr old male overweight orange cat Sunny, injured his knee recently. Sunny was limping & in pain with a sad outlook ahead. Our vet recommended & referred us to RRVS for surgery. RRVS changed his life from a sad future back to the normal cat life he should have. We were treated with care from the first visit. Office staff was friendly & professional. Dr Helms kindly took the time to explain the surgery’s pros & cons with us. He noted his treatment has been mostly with dogs. Cats historically have fewer injuries. Sunny’s surgery & follow-up with RRVS was exceptional. No limp & no pain. New discovery of potential hip related function found & treated with PRP injection. Sunny is a happy cat again but on a diet.

My husband and I were recently referred to RRVSS by our vet in Humboldt County for our puppy, Skylah, to have what we believed would be knee surgery. That night, we actually received a phone call from the surgeon to introduce himself and answer any questions or concerns we had. The next day we scheduled the surgery visit for the following Tuesday. We couldn’t be more grateful for the exceptional care provided by Dr. Fetherston and his entire staff. From the moment we arrived, everyone was compassionate, kind, and genuinely invested in Skylah’s well‑being. Their sincerity — especially when talking about their own animals — made a stressful situation feel so much more manageable. After examining Skylah under sedation, Dr. Fetherston determined that her knee did not require surgery after all. Instead, he recommended a surprising treatment option we hadn’t heard of before: a Platelet‑Rich Plasma (PRP) injection to support healing. We were incredibly impressed by this approach — not only because it avoided an invasive procedure, but because he took the time to explain it thoroughly and make sure we understood why it was the best option for her. Throughout the day, the staff kept us updated on every step of the process, which brought so much peace of mind. They even called the next day to check on Skylah and see how she was doing, a gesture that truly showed how much they care about their patients. Thanks to Dr. Fetherston and his wonderful team, Skylah is healing well, and we feel so fortunate to have had such a skilled, thoughtful, and compassionate group caring for her. We definitely recommend anyone needing surgery for their dog to go to RRVSS!

Dr. Helms is incredibly knowledgable and thorough, both in exams and surgical approach. In fact, everyone on the team (front desk, techs, and vets) was very nice and easy to talk to. They put me and my partner at ease, knowing our cat (Luna) was in good hands. They kept in close contact all throughout the process and gave us text/call updates every step of the way. 10/10 this would be the first place I would contact for any future fur baby surgical needs.

Simply the finest surgical services I've experienced. Their owner bedside manner is extraordinary. We went to RRVSS under emotional circumstances and felt like we were in the best hands around. Everytime the subject comes up, their team is well known and well respected by everyone we encounter... Vets throughout Humboldt County, petowners on the streets and at the beaches. When people ask, "where did you go?" and they hear Dr. Fetherston, the response is always, 'You're in good hands'.
