How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The nurse and trainee were very nice and empathetic to the situation, which I appreciate. The Dr however was amazing. He did a very good job at walking us through a very difficult process. Reminding us that our decision was solid and justified for our situation. Educated us on both sides of our choice. He did a great job ultimately helping us walk our best friend across his rainbow bridge… it’s definitely a hard part of the job.. and we thank you for your empathy. Rip Keegan Enzo.

I noticed some people have shared negative experiences about Eastlake clinic, but I wanted to share that my visit was the complete opposite — truly exceptional from start to finish! From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff was welcoming, professional, and kind. They greeted my puppy with smiles and made the check-in process quick and easy. The veterinarian and assistants were amazing — gentle, thorough, and clearly cared about my puppy’s comfort and health. They took the time to explain every step of the exam and answered all of my questions with patience and knowledge. The clinic was clean, organized, and had such a calm atmosphere. I left feeling confident that my puppy was in great hands. Everyone we met genuinely seemed to love animals. I understand not everyone may have had the same experience, but I can honestly say ours was outstanding. I’ll definitely be bringing my puppy back and recommending to other pet parents! Dr. Terry was the best and deserves a big shout out and another shout out to the staff!!

I trusted Banfield Pet Hospital in Chula Vista for my dog Izzy’s routine spay surgery, and I deeply regret that decision. During the procedure, I received a call from the veterinarian (Dr. Alyssa Atilano) saying she could not find my dog’s ovaries and was unable to complete the surgery. As someone who works in the medical field and assists in human surgeries, I was shocked. This is a basic, standard procedure, and hearing a surgeon say they couldn’t identify essential anatomy is extremely concerning. My dog was left with an unnecessarily large incision, pain, and no resolution — and now she may need to undergo a second surgery. I later learned that this doctor only recently graduated. While asking about further assistance and recommendations, I was told by the front desk that another doctor may need to do the procedure — someone “with more experience.” When I asked if this other doctor had any special credentials or was a specialist, I was simply told “no,” he just has more experience. That made it clear to me that the veterinarian who operated on my dog does not have sufficient experience and should not have been performing this surgery alone. I’ve filed a formal complaint with Banfield corporate. We are our pets’ voice — they can’t speak up for themselves, so we must. The reason I’m sharing this is to raise awareness for other dog parents. Please ask questions. Ask who is operating on your pet. Ask about their experience. I don’t want any other pet or owner to go through what we’ve been through. Our animals deserve safe and competent care

I recommend not going to this location EVER! matter of fact any banfield location. I took my dog for a regular dental cleaning on Saturday and she has been sick ever since. I took her for a follow up on Tuesday because she was sick the doctor never came into the room I was told she would call me, the doctor never called me. I called and scheduled a virtual appointment for 2pm today which the doctor never joined. Here it is 230 I called the banfield location and kept being put on hold so I hung up. This has led to me cancelling auto-renew on my banfield plan. I am absolutely done with banfield.

Frustrated with this branch requesting for a meds refill for my dog. They are not returning the call to be informed the status of the request. It was more than 4 days already, but the request was still pending. I was told that the Vet is working 2x/week, the Vet who prescribed the meds was not working. A week past by, the Vet ordered a refill for a week only. I’ve been waiting for the refill for 2 weeks for a month supply, and the Vet gave a week supply. Horrible experience.
