True to their word
If you were like us, you wanted pet insurance but felt you couldn’t justify the premiums. Well, we raised nine Labrador retrievers each of whom had medical issues, chronic or catastrophic, that cost us thousands of dollars over their lifetime. When we rescued our beagle, Henry, our vet gifted us with a month of Trupanion insurance. She wisely pointed out to us that none of us knew anything about Henry’s background. It was likely that his previous owner bought him from a puppy mill. Our vet also reminded us that while we were experienced lab owners we knew nothing about beagles.
(An understatement!) She advised us to at least keep the insurance for 3-4 years when a lot of conditions could surface.
Ten days after we brought Henry home, we rushed him to the emergency room because of a dangerously high fever. He was 11 weeks old, dehydrated and suffering from a massive urinary tract infection. He was admitted to the hospital, put on IV fluids and antibiotics.
We paid the bill on his release and submitted a claim, with the ER doctor’s diagnosis and inpatient charges. Trupanion paid as per our plan and the clearly defined deductible. We were kept up to date , by email, as to the status of our claim. Wish our human insurance did the same...
Because of Henry’s origins, he will most likely need more medical care in the future. We are committed to keeping him covered. The premiums represent dinner and a movie once a month for me and my husband. Small sacrifice for peace of mind.
