Pets can be full of surprises-so their insurance coverage shouldn’t be. That’s why Trupanion is dedicated to helping pets we love get the care they need. They’ve been around for more than 20 years, making them experts and setting standards for the industry. One perk of this, and what they pride themselves on, is the amount they pay out to pet owners for each claim. Paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurance provider. To date they have paid out $2 Billion in claims and have insured nearly 1 million pets.
Trupanion pets lead longer happier lives.1 Pets insured with Trupanion lived longer than pets without Trupanion because pet parents didn’t have to worry about the cost of the care their pet needed. Depending on the plan Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, has unlimited payouts-always, and can pay your vet bill, within seconds, at time of checkout, so all you pay is your portion (anything not covered by Trupanion). They have transformed the way pet insurance handles claims by eliminating the reimbursement process.
To put it simply, there is a reason why 98.7% of Trupanion members stay enrolled every month.

Trupanion has proven to offer truly terrible coverage. We pay way too much (about $45 per month) for absolutely no coverage considering they will claim everything and anything pertains to a pre-existing condition. My dog swallowed a tack once when he was a 5 month old puppy, fast forward 1.5 years later and he has not had any recurrent ingestion of foreign material, however, he recently got ill with a violent barking cough. The emergency vet told us to bring him in to rule out gastric volvulus (life-threatening condition). In order to rule out this condition, X-Rays and other diagnostic labs, services were employed. Turned out he had kennel cough and all other tests were negative after a $750 workup. We submitted the claim to TruPanion, knowing we have a $500 deductible per injury/illness, which is also a horrible policy, but regardless were hoping to be reimubrsed at least the $250 after deductible. I was utterly shocked when our claim was denied due to Trupanion claiming this all pertained to a pre-existing condition of our dog as he has a supposed "recurrent pattern of ingestion of foreign material." After speaking with the treating veterinarian, who agrees this is also a ridiculous theory, I am in the process of a lengthy appeal due to Trupanion's inability to handle any claim in a timely manner, in conjunction with their negligence to provide care for an animal on a condition utterly and completely unrelated to ingestion of a foreign material. The treating veterinarian has even said they obtained the imaging to rule out gastric volvulus, with ingestion of foreign material extremely low on the differential diagnosis. Trupanion simply works with all their power to avoid paying any possible reimbursement.
The most frustrating piece of this story is this is not new to us, unfortunately. As a puppy, our dog became very ill with a bizarre aseptic meningitis type of picture. After 3 days in an emergency vet with neurologist specialists weighining in on his diagnosis, he was diagnosed with SRMA (steroid responsive meningitis arteritis) after a nearly 7k workup. He has been completely fine since and has not had any recurrences thank goodness. However, this episode all started on day 28 of our policy with Trupanion. You should know Trupanion has a STRICT 30 day policy where for the first 30 days after enrollment any injury/illness that occurs is considered a pre-existing condition ( funny, because it certainly did not exist when we signed up for our policy). Regardless, all of our claims at that time were denied by Trupanion. Our vet tried to plead for our case but achieved no favorable result either. We ended up maxing out our credit cards and dipping into our savings to cover it because what else would you do with your supposedly dying 4 month old golden retriever puppy. The most frustrating part of that incident was we had HAD coverage for the first month we had our dog with AKC insurance and then switched to Trupanion because we THOUGHT (clearly, wrongly) that it would be better coverage. Thus, we never had a lapse in insurance coverage however Trupanion stated they counted the 30 days starting when we enrolled with them, and excluded the 30 days of our AKC coverage prior. Honestly, I think this company is a business first, and cares very little about your actual pets or their well-being and i would steer clear.

Trupanion is a lifesaver and blessing.
Trupanion really came thru on my fur baby’s back to back medical issues. I am so thankful I took out Trupanion pet insurance when my Lucy was just a pup. It has been a blessing. We were able to afford the surgeries and care for Lucy because of Trupanion. The claims were easy to file and they processed them very quickly.

Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.
Coverage
Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.
Payout Limits
The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit.
That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.
Deductible
If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.
Age Limits
All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life
Waiting Period
Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details.
However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
Like many other pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. Whichever insurer you choose, it pays to enroll early!
