An emergency surgery for our dog resulting in a substantial bill was handled very professionally and quickly by the team. They are very knowledgeable about all elements of the policy and helped me to understand what was covered etc. And the representative seemed to genuinely care about my pets condition. Very glad we have Trupanion insurance.
TRUPANION IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!
This is an updated review of Trupanion. I agree with some of the negative reviews here describing this process as frustrating and seemingly a scam - and in fact, wrote a not-so-positive review of my own back in May-June.
HOWEVER, I have to say that ultimately, Trupanion is amazing and very responsive. After many many years of full coverage for my 2 dogs, I never really got anything back since they were healthy without any significant issues so I never met my deductibles. I lost one of my babies last year, and Trupanion did cover some of his alternative treatments, but never had a chance for anything more significant before he passed away. Recently, my girl had a major emergency and illness with multiple hospital stays. Initially, Trupanion refused to reimburse for any of the charges because they separated her single condition (Cholangiohepatitis) into 6 different conditions, all with individual $1,000 deductibles. I was furious, even after speaking with several representatives. However, my veterinarian reached out and helped them understand that all of my dog’s issues were a single condition - and Trupanion eventually paid 90% of almost everything! I could not be happier with Trupanion, and have renewed respect and gratitude for all they have done to help me get my best friend back to good again (without becoming homeless). Trupanion has continued to come through for us, reimbursing for follow up appointments, imaging studies, labs, Rxs and even Rx food as my baby has slowly recovered over the past couple months. This is what I will say - do your work, keep up with the invoices/dates/charges and have your vet call or write a synopsis if you are having trouble getting through the process - because I promise that these people WILL listen and will do everything within reason to honor your policy, whatever it may be. It does require a little work on your part to submit everything, but it’s worth it because as long as your policy covers the charges - Trupanion will reimburse you. Reimbursement is within 24-48hrs or even at the time of your appointment if you choose this option so this is also fantastic. This is a really great insurance company and I have already convinced 3 of my colleagues to sign up with Trupanion in the past month👍🏼
Maybe a little more expensive than some of their competitors, but from what I have experienced - WORTH IT!

A friend of ours explained and recommended Trupanion for our dog's insurance. After review and comparisons to other companies, seems that Trupanion is a great option.
Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.
Coverage
Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.
Payout Limits
The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit.
That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.
Deductible
If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.
Age Limits
All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details.
However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
Like many other pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. Whichever insurer you choose, it pays to enroll early!
