Pets can be full of surprises-so their insurance coverage shouldn’t be. That’s why Trupanion is dedicated to helping pets we love get the care they need. They’ve been around for more than 20 years, making them experts and setting standards for the industry. One perk of this, and what they pride themselves on, is the amount they pay out to pet owners for each claim. Paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurance provider. To date they have paid out $2 Billion in claims and have insured nearly 1 million pets. Trupanion pets lead longer happier lives.1 Pets insured with Trupanion lived longer than pets without Trupanion because pet parents didn’t have to worry about the cost of the care their pet needed. Depending on the plan Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, has unlimited payouts-always, and can pay your vet bill, within seconds, at time of checkout, so all you pay is your portion (anything not covered by Trupanion). They have transformed the way pet insurance handles claims by eliminating the reimbursement process. To put it simply, there is a reason why 98.7% of Trupanion members stay enrolled every month. 1 Based on a November 2020 internal study analyzing third party hospital claims data comparing pets insured with a Trupanion policy to pets without a Trupanion policy. * Terms and Conditions apply. Positive review after visit to a new Animal ER

Our vet of many years was too busy to see our sick dog. We were advised to take him to the ER. I knew since I had dog insurance I would be able to afford to take him in. The reception staff mistakenly entered the Trupanion claim using the reason we brought our sick dog into to the ER. Trupanion paid as it was designed to within minutes! I persuaded the receptionist to put the diagnosis the vet gave as to what was wrong with our dog. She spoke to Trupanion and the claim sent to appeals. I paid for the portion of the bill so we could go home. By the next morning I had received a rext message to indicate we had been reimbursed our money. If only human health care worked this way!

I've been a Trupanion Customer for a…

I've been a Trupanion Customer for a Very Long Time! I was shocked and angered by what I had to go through in October this year. My chi had bronchopneumonia and was hospitalized on emergency as he needed O2 desperately on October 28, 2025. He got ill very rapidly and could not breathe. Coverage was initially denied at the emergency hospital at intake on October 28th, and again on the 29th, with no real explanation. I had to call, was put on hold for at least a half-hour while I was at the vet hospital and when she finally returned from this perpetual hold, your rep tried to tell me it was b/c my chi was not vaccinated in this year for Bordetella, which, incidentally, is not a required vaccine in NJ. I told your rep that my vet told me (at the time the vaccine was due, and I did vaccinate Bordetella the year prior) that he would not vaccinate this year, as my chi was having major digestive issues and my other chi had just passed from something similar, so we were going to be cautious until we figured out what was happening. More important, though, as I also informed your rep, there is no relationship b/t Bronchopneumo and Bordetella. I told your rep that saying that is like saying S.Aureus and Pseudomonas are in the same family (they are not). Then your rep tried to say it was because he had mycoplasma, again because he wasn't vaccinated for Bordetella. Again, wrong argument and I explained that one again, to which they would not listen. I followed vet recommendations, I treated my chi appropriately for myco; he was okay for 5 days, then he became ill with broncopneumo. I was told to appeal if I felt so strongly, and you bet I did! To get coverage to which I was entitled, I had to make an appt, go to my vet's office, call the appeals department (which I was also initially told I could not contact by your Trupanion rep who answered the phone, and I said I was told to call (which I was by Trupanion, get your story straight, don't waste my time), and they did ultimately connect us, but seriously?)) and did the appeal with my vet by phone, who told the claims rep the very same thing I did; that there is no relationship between Bordetella and bronchopneumo or Bordetella and myco!! Doesn't matter if he had Myco first. Only then did the claims rep listen. But, I was still forced to wait another 3 days for a verdict. It should have been immediate coverage at that point, with payment made immediately to the emergency hospital. I had to pay another $6800 toward my bill in the interim while waiting for the payment from Trupanion at the emergency hospital to take my chi home, because of your unnecessary delays. (Yes, they gave it back to me, but I really couldn't afford the expense and had to borrow money to cover my check because I could no longer count on Trupanion to do what was right and owed under the circumstances). Infuriating. I'm so angry. I'm keeping my insurance but it is clear you just don't want to cover legitimate claims. Then to add insult to injury, you paid an additional $2700 above the $17000 his hospitalization cost (less deductible and 10% which I was fine with) because you duplicated the first day's expenses and it took me another 5 days to get you to review and agree it was a duplicate expense and I didn't want the money; you finally told me to void the check when it arrived, which I did. You were NEVER like this in the past (Dec 2023 was my last claim for another dog and it was immediate that you covered it when I was at the emergency hospital). What happened to Trupanion? I don't even put in all my claims; there are so many I still have to file with you. I cannot wait to see how many more fights I'm going to have with you and btw, I don't back down, which is what I think you want us to do now. Your reps are clearly poorly trained and incompetent. Who puts Bordetella and Myco or Bordetella and bronchopneumo in the same class? Stupid. Clearly, it's just an obvious attempt on your part to avoid paying a legitimate claim, and you have trained your reps to deny first. Trupanion has become a really questionable company, putting their own profit ahead of legitimate claims for their insured clients. It's disgusting. I believe I am owed an incentive from Trupanion for this incompetence and debacle that this cost me in time and effort. I really want to know what happened to this company. It was NEVER like this. I'm just so angry. What do I pay all this money for (and I have 3 insured dogs currently with a 4th coming; all with every rider possible, never miss a payment, have insured at least 7 or 8 to date). I really want to know what has happened to you, why your claims personnel are so poorly trained, and why we are treated so poorly. Deny first is not a policy to be proud of; pushing people to have to fight to get what they are owed is unconscionable.

Response is extremely efficient and coverage for the pet is very good

Monthly Cost

Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.

Coverage

Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.

Payout Limits

The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit. That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.

Deductible

If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.

Age Limits

All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting Period

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details. However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Exclusions

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like: Examination fees Wellness and preventive care Elective, or cosmetic procedures Sales tax, where applicable Like many other pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. Whichever insurer you choose, it pays to enroll early! * Terms and Conditions apply. Coverage may vary by state. Not all veterinarians accept direct payment.
