REVISED -SeemED like a scam, but actually EXCELLENT
THIS WAS MY INITIAL EXPERIENCE - I submitted an updated review as all of this frustration was ultimately addressed and completely resolved by Trupanion, so I am changing my review. My initial experience below was still frustrating, but I want everyone to know that I no longer feel this way as Trupanion ultimately came through 100% and honored my policy. This insurance company and its representatives is actually excellent👍🏼👍🏼
Seems like a bit of a scam. I have had insurance through Trupanion for both of my dogs and cat for many years and have not really gotten much out of it since my pets have been without any significant health issues - until recently. I chose a policy with $1,000 lifetime deductible for individual conditions, which I thought sounded fair. What I am seeing at this point is that this company simply changes the name of the "condition" once you have met the $1,000 deductible. For example, my dog has been receiving laser and acupuncture therapy for her arthritic spine - for the first few invoices, Trupanion labeled the condition as "Arthritis", but once I met the $1,000 deductible, the condition was then changed to "Spinal Disc Disease" and the $1,000 deductible started over. My dog has never had an MRI or any other imaging studies to suggest or confirm any kind of degenerative disc disease, so why would Trupanion suddenly decide this was now a new diagnosis for which she was receiving the same treatment as arthritis? So, in reality I had to pay the first $2,000 before Trupanion reimbursed anything for the same condition.
Another example : Over the past several weeks, my dog has been suffering with an array of severe GI issues requiring hospitalization twice. She had many symptoms including vomiting, bloody diarrhea, pancreatitis, lethargy, dehydration, etc and it took some time to figure out the exact cause. Ultimately, we discovered my girl has Cholangio-hepatitis (gallbladder infection), so all of these symptoms are related. I spoke with a representative at Trupanion a couple weeks ago and was assured this would be addressed appropriately and considered a single "condition". I was also assured that they would go back and review the previous invoices where arthritis and spinal disc disease were considered separate conditions for the same procedure. I just spoke with them again, and nothing has been reviewed/resolved. They have once again broken up my dog's vet bills into separate conditions, each with $1,000 deductible. Pancreatitis, "Liver and Bile duct inflammation," and "Vomiting/ Diarrhea/ Lethargy/ Dehydration" are NOT separate "Conditions" - these are all SYMPTOMS of one, single condition (cholangio-hepatitis). My veterinarians have all agreed to provide anything necessary to confirm this, but Trupanion doesn't seem to be interested.
I seriously regret going with this company so many years ago, but all I can do at this point is let others know to be leary, accept that I made a poor decision and move on.
