Trupanion | Pet Insurance Review

Not "I would recommend to anyone" I HAVE recommended to EVERYONE I know! I currently go to Veterinary in the Caribbean and I debating getting rid of my Trupanion insurance since my dog is only covered in North America, however for $55 CAD a month I figured incase something happened. Something happened....a big something....all of a sudden he began limping (no accident or anything), I took him to Emergency at my school and they told me he had a Grade 4 Luxating Patella (knee cap out of place) but not ONLY in one leg....in BOTH. HIs visit was not covered since it is out of the country however, after a week of watching him limp and cry in pain (even though in pain medication) I decided he needed surgery ASAP and got a referral to a surgeon in Canada (there are none at my school this semester and they don't have the resources) I booked a flight home (during the middle of the semester) which cost me $1700 on Canada Day weekend. The surgery cost $4800 on top of my $1700 flight and my vet bills in the Caribbean; I cannot explain to you the feeling of relief when I got the email from Trupanion stating that they were going to pay ~$4100 of my dog's surgery. He had surgery by the best surgeon in the province and they ended up doing BOTH knees. The amount that they covered for JUST that lone surgery is more than my monthly payment for 5.5 years (which is how old my dog is - not to mention he has other claims). Dogs are so accident prone especially purebreds and rescues and Trupanion makes it fast and easy. I don't know a lot of people who have $5,000 sitting in their pocket for emergencies for their animals. It is also heartbreaking as a veterinary student to watch people come in who took the risk and cannot afford care for their animal. My dog is recovering well and his surgery went perfectly and he spent two nights in a facility with 24 hour monitoring and a vet present 24/7 - not to mention that because he had it done by a specialist if there area any complications he can just go back there without a referral. Thank you so much Trupanion for making veterinary care affordable and more importantly for helping my dog feel better!!!

I have had trupanion pet insurance for several years and with several cats... some of which became very sick. So far Trupanion has lived up to their policy of paying 90% of medical bills. This has allowed me to give my cats the care they needed in their time of need which I would not have been able to do on my own. So a huge THANK YOU to Trupanion!

Outstanding service and great coverage. One month after signing up my dog started to experience appetite issues. After several months of vet checks, meds and surgery I had racked up over $6,000 in medical bills. Trupanion typically approved one day after I submitted by email, no questions asked. I was amazed at how easy their process was and how fast they paid claims. Best insurance ever! Too bad they don't cover humans.
